THE "ACTİV" FLOATED.

A WINDFALL FOR MR, MARTY, ' News was received last areálog by Messrs. Marty and Co. that the wreck of the Danish steamer Activ, which went ashore at Sad Point, some 10 miles from Holhow, on the 7th April, while on a vorage from Pakhol to Holbow, had been floated off the rocks. it will be remembered that the ship was abandoned by the owners as being la too bad a position to be saved, and the wreck was put up for auction and knocked down to Mr. A. R. Marty for $1,500. The new owner at once placed ta-chief of the shipbuilding works of the Com- pagnie de Navigation Tonkinoise at Haiphong. the job in the hands of Mr. W. C. Jack, anglacer

This gentleman at once began work by shorlog up the bulkheads, and with the aid of two large powerful cargo-boats from Hongkong and pumps the wreck was soon in a condition to be hauled off at high tide. But it was not unill the 25th fast, upon the anival of the company's steamer Ranch, that it was flated company's Actto win towed to a sandy beach inside the means of a tag which was at the scene, the polat, where she was beached at high water.

Mr. Jack is now busily engaged in patching up the holes in the ship's bottom sufficiently to allow the ship to be towed either to Hongkong or Haiphong, whichever is found preferable, to be thoroughly repaired. Captala Meliance and a crew of Chinese were sent down to-day to take charge of her.

Mr. Marty is to be congratulated upon the success of his venture, which is entirely due to the skill and attention of Mr. Jack, who has once again proved his ability to undertake say work in his line and carry it to a successful conclusion.

THE GROWTH OF SHANGHAI.

So rapid, so vast, so inconceivable to all bat eye-witnesses has been the growth of Shanghai during the past twenty years, that he who would attempt to do anything like Justics to "the Unila republic" as it is not inaptly styled, within the compass of an ordinary newspaper article would be doomed to fallure from the very outset. Yet, strange to say; a-writer in the London and China Expres of the 1st May has osizyed it, and although hë of course falls to give his readers even sa approximate notion of what the thriving city. on the banks of the maddy. He starts off by stating that "some thirty years ago Municipal Council, of which Mr. Henry Dent was Chairman, introduced a Th. 500,000 budget, which the Shanghai ratepayers rejected farthwith The figure represented a Immense increase over the previous year...
