THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, SATURDAY, MAY 9, 1896.
A GHOSTLF WARNING.
(POUNDED ON FACT.) (Specially waited for the Hongkong Telegraph.) It has been a most depressing day. There has been a continal downpour, a steady unrelenting rain, that never once, in my numerous Journeys to the window, gave me any false hope that it intended to discontinue. Although it is not much part there a'clock, the stormy November day is already drawing to a close, and a premature darkutes is enfolding the godden earth in its dusky mantle. If my husband wore only isdcors with me, safe and dry. I should not care one jol about the weather. But he is not. Early this tooraing he was called sway to a distant farmhouse to one of his patients, and there I suppose he must be still. Really, I think grumbllagly to myself, Mrs, Smeedon might have chosen a mere propitious day to bring her first-barn into the world—to-day a veritable vale of tears !
It is also the anniversary of our wedding-day the first anniversary--and it leather bard fines that Harry should have been absent the whole day. Will he not, I wander disconsolately, be home in time to partake of the extra good dinner I have prepared for him? How I wish we were rich, and that he had a alce cosy little brougham to which he might comfortably defy the elements we have a dog-cart, but that is not much use, as far as keeping dry goes, on a night such as this one promises to be, for the wind is rising now, and is sweeping up the drive and round the house with a subdued sort of howl that will probably grow into aʼzoar.

victim of such awful unreasoning fear as then took possession of me. I tried to call out, but my targua was stiff and frozen with terror, and refused to atter a sound. A horrible cold creep- ing sensation comes over me. I catch at the curtains for support, sway, and fall heavily against the window. There is a confused sound of breaking glass, a gust of cold air, and then mercifully I become unconscious.
}
When I open my eyes agala I am in my bedroom, lylog on the bed, and Harry is beading over me somewhat angionsly. Nevertheless, a my eyes meat his, ha anys cheerily, “Ab, all right agale, ikile woman?
I take no notice of his question, but cling to the hand he halde out to me with all tha strength of which I am possessed. Then I menage to go out "Ob! Harry, thank God you are alive, and try to raise myself to get closer to him, but I find my arm is stiff and sore, and I sed that it is bandaged.
"How did I do it 7" I ask him, Indíeating my maimed limb.
batmed Teally don't know quite how you did It," Harry antwers me. “I only know that when Teame home about half an hour ago, I found you lying among sume broken glass, in front of the bow window in the drawing-room, more dead than alive, your arm all bleeding, and altogether, my dear child, looking a most ghastly little object, Do you feel strong enough now to tell me all about 1, and what happened? Were wou defending the house against burglars, or did you set ghast 7"
We had ascended as far as the firel door when sudden unaccountable noise brought our footsteps to a halt. This was succeeded by a crash and sickening thud, mingled with which were shrieks and groans and cles of terror,
My Angers close convulsively on Harry's arm. "Oh!" I cry, pearing over the balusinde and trembling in every limb, "It must be the lift. Let us go down and see,"
From every side of the hotel people were rushing to the scene of the disaster, one which you will doubtless remember as actually having happened in Paris a few years ago. The wire of the lift dad given way, and it had falica a drop of go feet, tot s sont survived the fatal accident. Two or three lingered an a few hours, some even a few days, but in the end succombed to the terrible injuries they had received. I CAR Ever think of it even now without a shudder, for most assuredly had it not been for my ghostly warning Harry and I would have lost our lives that night.

France almost equal to that of refusing to join "the military operations "before Alexan drin. As the Commission of Liquidation was instituted for the express purpose of superseding the jurisdiction of the Mixed Tribunals, where Individual creditors were bringing actions against the Egyptain Government, it is difficult to see how the action of the Parisian Syndicate to appealing from the Commissioners to the Courts can result in anything but fallare. In the meantime, the authority of the French Government is weakened by the result of the Income-tax debate, in which the amendment in favour of the B was only carried by #li majority of sixteen.
