Stewart, und was fitted out in Johore. Each of the Inggers was provided with all the latest improvements in diving apparatus and a competent dive and "tender were attached to each of them, together with a crow of fourmen. Amongst the various crews 'many peoples were represented-Chloere, Japanese Malays, Mauritians, Larcars and others. The divers all balled from the Pallipp'ues and received monthly wage of $18 together with a bonus of £20 sterline for all shell Paised by them. This fleet sailed from Johore on the 29th of May of last year bound for Borneo. From thence Labuan was made; where the fleet was refited, and the lurgers were sent to reported beds, bat owing to the inclement weather diving was impossible. While at Labaan news was brought of the wreck of the St. Pancreas und Captain Williams visited the scene of the disaster with a view to raising the ill-fated vessel, but as the, underwriters at Singapore would not give favourable terms nothing was done. After a thorongb overhaul and refit the Islands to the North were carefully prospected. without result, as were the passages to Sandakan, which place was also visited, and several equally unsuccessful excursions were made, Sandakan being the temporary headquarters of the expedlion. From thence a course was shaped for the Sul. On arrival, application was at once made for a concession, but the local hathiles bed no power in the matter and conarquently if bad la be referred MADI and from ibente

·Madrid for consideration Here it became necesary to re-man the feet in part, conse- quently Captain Williams left for Hongkong. As an instance of what the loggers are capable v, the Captain says that he made the trip from Solo to Sardakan, a distance of 180 miles, la days 20 hours, the nights being spent at anchor, the last thirty miles as a matter of fact being performed in 3 hours.

The life on board these craft is described as being most enjoyable providing one can "rough, It," as of necessity the loxartes of life are not to be obtained. Contionally craising about among the sleds, and meels at times with extremely picturesque scenery, much of it pos- Ressing the additional charm of being quite unknown to foreigners. Good sport is frequently obiafnable with fowling plece "pheasants, pigeons and jangio fowl belog found in large quantities, and often deer and pig are to be had The natives are described as biläg very friendly and always glad to see strangers for the purpose of bartering, etc. From a commercial point of view Captain Williams tells us that pearling is not what it formerly was, shelt that used to fetch £200 a ton now realizing only about £70; but even at this latter price it pays fairly well. Then, again, all pearls found are clear profit, no account being taken of them in any estimate of expenses. The diving apparatas has been so much imprayed during the last few years that a diver can now work in 20 fathoms of water and remain in that depth for a period of three bours,

To sum up, the life of the pearler possesses many altracions, one sere a lot of primeval lands and peoples, mod t.bas just enough of the gambling element to make it attractive.

OUR POTENtial fightING STRENGTH.

BY A MILITARY EXPERT. We are all nowadays agreed that the command of the sex is the first and most vital condition of our contioned existence in time of war, and that an overwhelming anvy is the best possible guarantee for the maintenance of peace; but the events of the past two months have revealed to even the man in the street the possibility of a coalition against an which, in point of number of men, ships, and guss, might challenge our supremacy with very reasonable prospects of success. It is improbable that any costition within reason could sweep our fiect from the sour, except after several works of severe fighting. The chances are, owing to the Inherent weakness of all coalition leading, that we should not be overwhelmed, but would succeed in holding our own with difficulty until our resources to shipbuilding power, gradually, after perhaps three years, enabled us once agala
