GREAT FIRE IN BANGKOK.
THE DORNIO CON RICE MILL OUTTED,
HAMOKOK, March 25th. Early this morning a fire broke out on the premises of the Borneo Company's Rice Mill, at Bangkolen, and before afd could arrive to cope with the flames the Rice Mill and extensive rice godowns adjoining weis well alight and defied all efforts to get the fire under. The Rice Hili nɛd godowas were aventually burned to the ground.
At 2.30 the Police arrived on the sceus of the conflagration, and Prince Naret drove down soon afterwards.
A detachment from the Navy, under command of Commodore de Richelleu came up soon after, and the force made a gallant attempt to fight the fire. It had, however, got 100 firm a hold on the bullding, and all efforts were useless. Some portion of the paddy ge- dawns were saved, and it is generally considered very fortunate that the fire was kept off the caW *mili. Mr. Black, the Engineer of the mills, and the entire staff of the Borneo Company were: todefatigable in their efforts to save the property. The loss is roughly estimated at $100,000, which is covered by insurance in the offices for which the Borneo Company are agents.
The origin of the fire is said to be due to the upsetting of a kerosene oll lamp.
The mill was
a comparatively new one, having been erected only about alue years ago. Additions had been made to it from time to time, and this rice mill was probably one of the fluent in Bangkok,
It may, however, be mentioned that owing to the indifferent ice season the loss of the mill will not probably greatly inconvenience the Borneo Company,—Stam Bria Prist.
