THE TRADE OF KWINGSI.

By the beginning of December two of the members of the Yamen called at the British and beissued in aday or two granting toemissionaries request. Battwo things happened which prevent ed this. The firs: Was an unexpected Edic: the next day degrading Wang Ming-dan, and of the strongest supporters of the salonaries in the Yamen. This weakened the pro-missionary party. The other thing was that the French Mialster, according to one of the very highest Chinese Ministers in Peking, objected to granting anything to the misionaries, as this was bringing up again the que fan of the right of missiona rics to deal with the Chiness Government dites which the French Government got the Popa to withdraw a few years ago. Notwithstanding this the Yames continued to have interviews of religious liberty were at their request pat with us, and further decuments on the subject

before them.

In view of this technical difficulty raised by the French Minister, the Rev. H. H. Lowry, D.D. who alter Dr. Wherry's departure took his place, and myself, having given all the explan. allons that the Taungli Tamén asked for, once more called upon the British and American | Representatives,

A great deal of smuggling is carried on in the province of Kwangsl, and it is therefore difficult to estimate the value of the trade. · At Pore-ting I was told that over ang milljón tael's worth of · The French Minister had been very indefatig. | merchandise passed through the port every able in the interests of the Roman Catholics Year. RODBERS AND PIRATES. Travelling in Kwangol is attended with consl- Perable dinger, and the loss of merchandise and private effects is very common. Pliner is rife on the rivers Everybody who can afford it is armed, and nobody is safe. The dafor depre dations of large bands of armed men afloat and ashore keep the more peacefully disposed people

in a state of constant terror. Cargo-boats and, rafts mount cannon on their decks” and houses, and even smell boals carry one or two muskata and other weapons for their protection against the social parasties who tofest the rivers and crecks of the entire province.

THE WEST RIVER.

The sources of the Si-klang, or West River, are in the province of Yunnan, whence li fiswi, down through the provinces of Kwangsi and Kwangtang and empties itsel into theses notvery far from Hongkong. A small branch of it extends from Sinibal-baleadowa to Canton. The West River is navigated, eff and on, by small revenue cruisers and other government steamers as 'far as Wochow-fa, the frontier part of Kwangel but these steamers could ascend to Pose-ting it the river was properly surveyed and buoyed Filate would, of course, be required to take steamers past dangerous places between Wechow-in and Naoring-fa, or at all events at fer un as Hwan-chow, Pose-ting is a city about Eo mlies from Po-al, the frontier town of Yonnan, Poal is reached by boats carrying about a ton of cargo la three days from Po-se, but the return journey (down streum) can be accomplished in one day. It takes at least 23 days to get to Yunnan-ta from Wackow-fa

The evidence having been led, his Lordship submitted to the jury the polat whether or not the death was caused by the negligence of the neisoners. If so, they were to return a verdict of gally it otherwise then not guilty."

After brief consideration the Jary returned verdict of gallty,

His Lordship said in passing sentence-I entirely concur with the verdict of the Jury. You sald you know there was a fire la Queen's Rond near East Street and you might have known that savo many people in it. Yet you do not hesitate such a thoroughfare was the more likely to

to run that heavily-laden truck down a steep road like East Street, considering that having called out it was everybody's business to get out of your way. But other people had as much right to be in Queen's Road as yourselves and your truck, and among them was the poor boy whose sudden and terrible death you caused. Of course you did not mean to klil him ; If you had done so your ·ense might have been one of murder, but you killed him by your carelessness | and negligent disregard of the safety of people in a pubile thoroughfare. Although I am sorry to have to sentence you, I must pana vach a sentence as may act as a warning to others, The sentence Is that each of you be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for four months,
