ADELAIDE, February 16:5.. Mr. John Lindeny, writes a capital letter in to-day's Advertiser on the old subject of the :- sixategia Importance of Port Darwin harbour. He contends that the changes wilch have taken place recently in the situation ofäftales'the East, and the further wast developments which may be looked for in that quarter to the near future, iends to raise Port Darwia to a posklon which cannot be Ignored in connection with any scheme for Imperial defence brought forward- for 'considération
The "wilter also makes special reference to the natural faciles existing at Port Darwin for the construction of day docks. The Adverdier comments on the above Telter in
terms of warm approval, and opines that the Imperial Government amid at once extously consider the advisability of stabilsblag a Daval station at Fort Darwin, seeing that the harbour is admittedly ore of the beat in the world, capable of easily affording sucherage to the largest flects, and that being the terminus for the cable given it special claim for pro- tectior. The Farbour would form the safest and most convenient bass on iks north coast for the operitons of a squadror, and if scised by any hostile power the result would be disastrous. The editor also points out that the making of Port Darwin an 'Imperial naval and coalinga station would tend to bring the construction of the Transcontinental Railway within the cate gory of practical undertakings,
