The transistor of this proclamation thinks that the idea of "holsting the flig "has probably arlsen, or been furthered, by the phrase in the document which is translated, "sign⚫ling" but which in the orignal is expressed by two words which iterally mean "raising (or holsting) fi gw," and which (as there is no diatincifon of singular And plural lo Chineso noma) might so mean hoisting and (as there is no definite or indefinite articles in the Chinese language) might mean "holsting the flag," As in the Chinese text the phrase bolating (or sålslag) flags is intermixed with "exercise, or drill" and "ilde surveying the friend, to whom we sie greatly indebted for the translation has no doubt that the correct idiomatic rendering of the phrase "rafting flaga "Is, as translated, “* signal- ling" in this particular connection.

Before a meeting of the Shipmasters" Society, held in the rooms of the London Chamber of Commerce, Captain Blackmore in the chali, ■ paper on "Fast Pantiges and Best Router" was read by Mr. William Alltogbam. The author remarked that steam had not yet driven the sailing ship from off the seas. Fifty yeam #go there were not more than 150 sailing ships in existence in the British merchant navy exceeding 500 tens register. The most sought after exiling ships had increased from 1,000 tons in 1860 to 1,500 tona la 1870 and to 1,000 teas la 1880. Apparently 2,500 to 3,500 tons register would be 1900. admirably. Then, again, the apprentices would obtain proficiency in meteorological matters, on which the length of a passage often depended, were they called opan to read the barometer every watch, together with the temperature of air and sex. He was of oplelon that, taken as whole, the sailing ship did not make a faster passage now than she did 40 years ago, Despite latter-day attentions, the ships under the British fing had not only had the Hon's share of the ocean-carrying trade, but had also made the quickest passages on record. St there was decidedly room for improvement, more especially, perhaps, in the Pacific trade. Many cases consplied to prevent a rapid passage over which the shipmaster had little, if any, control, Some time ago the Hamburg Hydrographic Office carried out an interesting loquiry loto the duration of voyages effected by wooden, fron and steel ships between Europe and parts in the Bay of Bengal.. The main conclusion arrived at by the inqalier seemed to be that the advan tage rested with the wooden ship, slece the loss on the fron ship in the homewart passage was greater than the gals in the outward page. Under certain conditions, determinable in every case by the master from that knowledge of the possession of outsiders, the passage to ports on the west coast of the Amerters was much safer and quicker by s'eating boldly eastward from the South Atlantic, and altogether avolding Cape Horn. Even should the Horn be attempted and westerly gales prevent advance, It would be well to run east for Ben's Strait,

The reading of these lines was received with the greatest enthusiasm, the cheering being agalo and again renewed. The musical part of the programme consisted of Mendelsohn's over ture to the "Hebribes," by two viollos: 'cello, organ and piano, and the rendering of Haydn's Kaiserqualett by two violins, viola, and 'cello. Both pieces were executed with admirable ex. pression and fiolak-in fact, it may, says OUI Kobe contemporary, well be doubted whether professional musicians could have improved on tha.flac readerlog given. After an interval a play, written by Mr. Thiel, and entitled "In Himmlischen Gefilden," was acted by members of the Club, and as it was full of real and personal allusions, its performance created the most uproarious merriment. Sapper followed, and one of the most successful social eveningi --given by the Club came to an end some time in

Assuming that the banker had obtained from his customer a valid pledge of the goods by transfer of the bill of lading, and that he still retained the bill of lading, they bad to inquire next as to the effect of the trans- nction as between the banker and the shipowner, Being the lawful holder of the bill of lading, the banker was the person entitled to possession, subject to any ifens which the shipowner might have on it. OUR REGARDS TO MR. RUSSELL.

The writer of these lines haroby tenders to Mr. W. Clark Russell the unorance of his thanks and appreciation. I have always loved ses sterios, and those of Br.
