It is useful to study tha fallures of others, and In this case it is even Important to do so, 'as no doubt China wiil some day be an excellent outlet for English trade.

With remarkable but admewhat misrulded perseverance, France on the 15th of October despatched a Mission d'Expleration Commerciale to China, which, I suppose, will try to find out why previous attempts have falled, and prepare the way for a second syndicate. The mission has at lis head Mr. Roucher, who, first as an Employee in the Chinese Maritime Customs, and later as French Consul, has bad excellent opport unities of studying China and the Chinese; there ts's "secretaire générale" and a lot of eminent specialists, one of whom is more particularly Chambers of Commerce of Marelles, Bordeaux, charged with the stu ly of the Red River. The Lille, &c., hive each sent a representative. M. Lebon, Minister of Commerce, sent a tele- gram in the name of the Governmeal, speeding the mission on its way. They will make a capital report, draw the most logical con- clusions from what they have learned, recom- mend some kind of semi-official organization of French Irade in China, and then, when enough money has been lost, the thing will be dropped for another decade. Of course we shall again hear that English intrigue ruined the venture.

THE GAINS OF GERMANY. For tome year' there has been a certain number of English traders in China who desire that her Majesty's Government, through its Minister and Consals, should support their Individual efforts to promoting their business, seeing that during late years German trade has developed so remarkably, and that China ir now practically buying all her war materials la Germany, or, more correctly, from Krupp, They attribute this success to the active support given by the German Minister and Consuls, not only to wade in general, but more especially to certain large In obtatalog orders from in this cut. That they have succeeded in this is certain, bat it is not reasonable to stranged for Christmas and Boxing Day jump from this to the conclusion that the and the weather being belght a very pleasant increase in the general trade of Germany with feature of the holidays it proved.
