JAPAN'S ORDERS FOR WARSHIPS.
Konz, December 3rd, From authoritative Information that has reached us, we learn it to practically decided that the contracts for building the len men-l-war by which the Japanese navy is to be increased will all go to English firms. We slon hear that English firms will supply the whole of the machinery and gear for the enlargement of the docks at Sasebo and other worke contemplated. The New York Maritima Register recently remarked that if Americs secured the..confpicts for dalfding, the new JK anere men.nl-war, it would, demonstrate. beyond all cavl that the coming shipbuilding Irade of the world would be done in the United States. Such a demonstration is apparently to be postponed; the old country is not yet played out. NEW GUINEA EXPLORATION.
ONLY 22 SURVIVRES OUT OF 45 STARTERS.
The schooner Myrtle, according to the Torvet Stratis Pilar of the 23rd alt, brought to Thursday Island from Port Moresby a terrible tale of what was a most disastrous exploring expedition. Twenty-two natives recently arrived at Mota to a starving state; and they were at once removed by the Government to Port Moresby, where they are being properly looked after. They are natives of the New Britain and New Ireland falands; and gave a careful and fairly intelligible account of their experiences. As far as could be gathered from them it appears that a German naturalist (who arrived in German New Guinea with very high credentials from home) and the Commandant of the German Police left the explore headquarters of that colony to the country inland to the southward. They took with them 43 natives from New Britain, After being out about two months their supply of rations became exhausted, and the party lived upon water and grass, the country failing to supply other edible products. When on top of the mountain ranges (no doubt the Owen Stanley Ranges) It was deemed best to endeavour to seach succour in Belsh New Goines. A scourge of flies and of land, leeches wrought much havoc, inflicting terrible sores upon wil the travellers, who were almost devoid of clothing

disease. No natives were met with in the Interier, the country being mountainous and thick jungle. At the beads of a large river Aowing to the southward a raft was made with which the European leaders hoped to reach help more expeditiously. The natives did not take kindly to the raft, which they desired to have tried before all ventured upon it. The Commandant, however, ridiculed, their tears; and embarkation was commenced. As the raft left the shore six of the natives hesitated 10 as to lose their pages.
