This race, the race of the meeting, excited the greatest interest. An ideal start was made, and for the Geat half-mile there was no choice between the crews. Then the Germans pulled ahead a -length, this position being maintained for the next half-mile. Then, as the speed was Increased, Lammert's crew proved unable to respond and gradually fell in the rear. The Scotch continued to increase their lead, but when within 300 yards of the line Erin's sons put on a spart. They proved unable, however, to catch the braway Scots, who won by about two lengths, amid a perfect pandemonium of whistles and yells from the spectators. Time, 10 min. 491 secs.
