ATTEMPTED, MURDER.

Yesterday mamining the Chinese toterpreter of the steamer Amprise of Fapan, who was Impli. cated in the surault cases on board that ship and which were lately before the Magistrate, made a determined attempt to murder & Chinese girl of the unfortunate class at No. 42 Staunton Street, This man had been discharged from his ship the day previously and had at once gone to the brothel named, and spent his time with the woman, with whom he had become lafatuated. From the story of the póst girl, he had endeavoured to par ute her to accompany him to his nativeplace as b's wife and she had refused. In bis jealous rage after her declfotog, be made a murderous attack upon her with a varor. Her night check was cut to the bour, and soveral slashes were made at the neck and about her bead in his attempt to kill her, but the girl succeeded in preventing him from accompilabing Lis object until ber screams had brought assistance in the shape of a Sikh constable and a Chinese walchman. They at once seized the assailant and carried him to the Police Station, the girl being taken there lo a chair. After the story of the intended victim had been heard it was found that the mann had 'swallowed a quanilly of aplam, with the Intention of taking Bis own life, baran emetic frustrated this plan, Both the parties were sent to the Government Civil Hospital where they were attended to, The man rapidly recovered, but last night made another attempt to take his life by jumping over. the balcony, but his guard was too much on the alert and three attempts were baulked · Ths | unfortunate women Is doing faftly well, and unless a change for the wornn seta lá ško la expected to recover soon,

THE ** BELGIC”

The Azigić, says the Advertiser of the 19th, has "wisted round, sed is now stern on to the beach at Suncaki, Instead of broadside on formerly. She has 11 feet of water in her for- ward hold and only two or three feet aft, bạt It Is stated that the leak is under control. This is very likely, as Cap'vin. Hardy, the diver, is on the spot and severs pumps, including the big one belonging to the Yokohama Engine and Iron Works, were sènt down on Wednesday. The plan of anchoring the big steamer while she is being unloaded is found to be far more ellee- liva theoretically than practically. The anchors have nothing whatever to catch a grip on, the bottam being sand, with volt rock below, so that when a good pull is pat on the chains the anchor fukes plow through the sand with comparative case; and hence the fact that the versel has swung around as she has done, and climbed up the beach backwards, despite the efforts made to restrain her.

On Wednesday they eventually began the work of unloading, the circumstances seeming to justify no further delay, and the original scheme of lightering the cargo and towing the lighters up to Yokohama was, owing to the exigencies of the moment, abandoned. The cargo is now being taken to the beach, and 100 tons were lauded,

The Advertiser further says that if the worthy residents in the vicinity get anything like a decent show only a percentage of the freight that has touched the beach will reach its con- signees ; because, it is stated, that a man in that locality who does not steal whenever and what- ever be gets a chance to fa regarded by his neighbours as a fool. This view is open to doubt, Past experience scarcely justlßes" such mis- givings as to the action of Japanese at a wreck of

The Chairman väld :-Gendamos, I will, with your permission, take the report and statement of Recounts as read; "they have been in your "hands ten days and have no doubt received attention. As stated in the report, a every change has this year been made in dealing with sterling reeipts and payments. Since the formation of the Company these items have been taken, for the purposes of statletice, at a uniform rate of 4/- per dollar. Until the recent material fall in exchange the mode of adjustment was of little moment, but considuing the vary marked difference that exists at present between ikli falo and that now current, the Directors are of opinion the latter should take the place of the previous fixad systern, and this will be the practice in future. Although the wef resalt w be precisely the same by either method the pre- sent mode will show the revenge and expandi. ture in silver-the currency in which the Com: pany's accounts are kept. This change also accounts for the apparent increase in charges and Directors' fees (he latter include the fees of consulting commitites in London and | Australia), these and other sterling charges being
