THE POST OFFICE REVENUE. “TO THE EDITOR OF TRE. Lokalcom DeumaraPI” 51 ----Your correspondent “Observer" com- plains that the Chinese have started or are now running private post offices on their own
Wonder Wouldn't lots account. No foreigners like to do the same ? The fact is that the Chinese have had such unpleasantexperience of the honest and upright foreign postal system that they prefer their own is being equally, f! not more sale and sure than the Government F,O. They have, alas 1 discovered that "for ways that are dark and tricks that are monɑ" the .
heathen Chinese is not slone pecullar.
Why seek to victimise the simple natire ? Let him enjoy his liberty. Is the envy of an outsider or the greed of some postal officials to do satisfied by the suppression of Chiasse post offices! When the Government Post Office is able to garrantee the safe transit of ali postal matter, then, and not till then, will be the time to lasist upon the natives making proper use of it.
Don't forget 150 raglilerid letters "lost" in one year! But how many unregistered packets and letters have gone astray in that period? Who will aver that the gigantic Landen General Post Office, la comparison to which this Hongkong concern is absolutely beneath con tempt, show such a record on this ? It is, in my humble opinion, shameful.

We hear of some arrests to-day for the breach of the Post Office Ordinance In respect of letters arriving by the Brangshas from Macao. We are a little sorry that a beginning should have been made in a "useful and necessary work without notice, and ample notice, being given to the Chlaese that the law, hitherto treated as a dead letter, was about to be enforced Before any attempt is made to draw within the sphere of the operations of our made under the constant supervision of a daly Post Office letters that have hitherto, by the | smuggling inward, and the other lot was attempt. | generally the most unhappy and the most ilable on a shopkeeper, a coolle was sentenced to &

Even if this had been done it would be a mistake to apply the law, at least at first, to such a place as Macao, which, although It has a Post Office of its own effectively delivering letters within Macao, is yet simply sport through which many letters must pass to and from the Interior of China. Apply the law first to the traffic in letters between Hongkong and the Australian Colonies, where there can be no reasonable excuse for the sending of lotters by private means. We hope Mr. Wodehouse will dismiss all the cases that may be brought before him, with a strong expression of his opinion.
