ANTI-FOREIGN OR ANTI-

MISSIONARY?

The following is the letter referred to in our notes and comments -

To the Editor of the KOBE CHRONICLE. DEAR SIR The above subject is for the moment uppermost in the thoughts of the civilized world, and all are anxious to obtain as much light as possible on the situation. The writer does not profess to bave new light to add to the subject, but claims to know something of the question derived from a residence extending over many years la the Yangtse valley. The states that the movement is an anti-missionary Koba Chronicle in its leader of the 13th definitely one. This is a bold suggetion to make in the face of the evidence from China and the statements of there who have experience. The writer of the article in question urges an exhaustive Inquiry not only into the cause of the trouble, but into "the fact to which wa bave previously called attention, namely, that only missionaries are singled out for attack." In reference to an faqalty into methods of work, missionaries are ever only too glad to give all assistance to such inquiries, when honestly prosecuted, and a Government or any other Commission appointed to do this work will be assisted to the utmost by every missionary body in the Empire. The remainder of the sentence is a mis-statement of fact which is an inexcusable mistake for a well- leformed writer to make.
