GENERAL MANAGERS: THE AMERICAN TRADING COMPANY, BANKERS!
THE HONGKONG AND SHANGHAI BANKING
CORPORATION..
THIS
LEGAL ADVISER:
H. S. WILKINSON, Esq.
HIS Company has been formed for the purpose of carving on the business of Cotton Splooing and Weaving at Shangbal.
It is latened that the business should at first be confined to spinning,, the original equipment for which will be not less-than-40,020 Špindler, with Buildings and Machinery. Wearing Machinery will be added afterwards. Sufficleat Englae and Boller powertlor both purposes wil! be installed at the outset.
The
Company proposes to import the most approved Machinery, to acquire a suitable site, and to erect Mille for the manufacture of Cotton Yaras and Cloths bast sulted to the China markets.
Arts well known the importation of Machi- by Foreigners has hitherto been officially obstructed, but Chinese have been allowed to Import Machinery under special permits and Colton Mills owned by them havè bien la unc. cessful operation for some years. At present, Mills comprising about 100,000 Spladies are either working of in an advanced stags at this port alone.
Under the recently concluded Treaty between China and Japan, the restriction on the Import ation of Machinery has been removed, and this field of industrial enterprise is now open to Foreigners and Chinese alike.
It li confidently believed that there still exists an opening for maro Coltoa Miilu kere, and that their product will successfully compete with and ultimately supplant that brought from abroad. It is uvident that, 'un'compared with Japan, the much more extensive markets o! Chloe may be counted apon to consume a greatly increased product.
The Cotton Milla in Japan operate some 900,000 Spindles, a very large proportion of the output of which is absorbed in that country, They draw their supplies of the raw material about equally from China, and India and the United States. The difference in cost of the raw materiał grown la Chins would favor Milla bere as compared with those 'in Japan to vary
considerable extent.
The markets for the coarse. Yarns in China bave hitherto been chiefly supplied from India, whilst small but increasing imports of Japanese Yarns have found a market here." The Import
DI
of Indian Yarns during the psat four Shanghai alone averages over 105.000 three plents each sonually, whilst the principal porta in the South of Chloa bave taken during
the time period an average of 136,000 bales, The demand for Yarma in Chlan might have": been supplied with advantage to producer and consumer allke by locally" established Mills, working cotton of home growth.
Ao smple supply of Ra Cotton may be counted upon, as the aron of cultivation exx be, increased indefinitely to supply any, Increased demand.
