No wonder the lbs. 7,500,000 London market is quoted “ dull."

We are glad to learn that the Bazaar held on Thursday at the Masonic Lodge, under the suspices of Mrs. J. H. Bathgate, was a completo inccers. The proceeds are to go towards the hallding of a church for the CM.S. at Hing Wbs. We understand that over $:00 was reslized.

The Treaty of Peace between China and Japan having been raissed on the 8th ult, there are terrible grumblings on all sides about the River Min not having yet been opened to shipping, We believe that all has been done that could be done by the foreign authorfiles, but more pressure should be brought to bear on the Chinese. It is most fnconvenient and expensive to have our anchorage thirty miles away from the centre of trade,

On Saturday the 18th altimo and following days, masters representing tone from Pekilog Paklums and Pan Yongs districts were placed on the market. Samples of Beemoos, Kaltow and other districts are not yet to hand there- fora na erltesion can be formed of the crop, so far the quality of the ten is considered better than the earlier supplies of last season, Texmes are ssklag rates greatly in excess of London limits so that no undan arzlety on the side of buyers to force operation is apparent.

Tea le very naturally the absorbing topic of conversation just now, and the relative merits of Pakiing, Panyonge, SeMoos, Souchongs, etc. are freely discussed. The general opinion of the crop is satisfactorily, Fise tea is chiefly in demand, consequently high rates are demanded for ball chops possessing plate A out 7,000 to 8,000 packages of Souchongs, Pakling and Panyonge have been taken from the market during the past these days st pilcer said to be Tis. 3 and 4 in acess oflast year. SMART WORK,

One of the smartest places of work put thmugh in a shipbuliding yard for a long time past has been accomplished by the exports of the Hongkong and⋅ Whampos Dock Company to-day. We refer to the painting, sceaplog and 'eltivating * of the 6,000-tën. German mall liner Prian Helarich. This huge vessel was taken la at No. 1 Dock (Kowloon) at noon yesterday and in two hours and a ball the dock was pamped completely dry nad hundreds of men were hard at work on ker-inside and outside. Work proceeded untaferruptedly throughout the night and by eleven o'clock this forenoon sha had been scraped all over, covered with two cont of paint. had her twin propellers touched up and | was practically ready to resume duty on the vasty deep. "At noon all her passengers, Including ex-Viceroy Li Han-chang, were on board, the massive dock gates were thrown open and amidst the booming of bombs, the rattle of crackers and fusty cheer, she glided gracefully through the ways and darting at a zo-knot galt through Ly-so-moon Pass wAR soon, well out to sea and lost to sight over the distant herish. We congratulate the Dock Company on succeeding in doing with Astatte labourers what would be considered at home a tall feat with skilled British workmen, There's no knowing what can be done until one tries, and that the Dock Company undertook a bit job and carried it through with remarkable rapidity there cannot be say shadow of doubt whatever; they tried, and success crowned their efforts.

The American ship George F. Manson, which is expected here shortly from Singapore, is chartered for New York at the rate of about 301, per ton.

There is a great demand here from the North for steamers at fair eaten, and a number of settio- ments are reported to have taken pises during. the past ten days,
