THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, MONDAY, JANUARY 14, 1895.

THE PLAGUE IN TUNG KUN.

The following official report of the bubonic plague in Tunkun district, in the provlace of Kwanglung, ahoat fifty miles from Hongkong, was published in the Government Gazette on Saturday: It endorses the reports on the same subject which from time to time during the past four or five weeks appeared in the Hongkong Telegraph. The inte of affairs an But

forth by Dr.

WANcott, though by no te Bourne, the Vice-Consul et Canton ; his know serious at the present time, ladicates elements which, it appears, many possibly develop a somewhat serious epidemic at no distant date, and It therefore behaves the Government to keep a sharp watch on passengers arriving from that part of the mainland. The report reada as follows:-

and terms "Wen-yik" *Shih-cheng" which embrace any suddenly fatal cpl'emic disease

In closing this report. I have the honour to bring to your notice the kind manner in which the mission was received by Dr. Kühne and the great | trouble he took to help us in every way.

I shio met with all possible help from Mr.

of the ledge country, people, and language Ime to overcome many difficulties and to enabled accomplish my mission in very much shorter time than would otherwise have been necessary. Interpreter W. Qulucey was also a valuable ansistent and displayed great intelligence and tact to the performance of his duties,

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your obedient Servant,

SINCLAIR WESTCOTT, Surgeon-Major, A.MS.

I was accompanied from Canton by. My. The Hon. The Colonial Secretary, &c., &c., &c. F. 5. A. Bourne, the Vice-Consul at that part.

At Tung Kun on the 31st December, I inter- viewed Dr. Kühne, of the Rhenish Mission, who has been resident at the Mission Hospital for the last seven years, and he informed me---
