THE BURNING QUESTION. To twa Euron oy vue "'Honɑcomo Tacubrati.” DEAR SIR,-Now, thanks to many months' arduous Inbours by the members of the Sanitary Board, and after a cost of over $100,000 to the Government, and a bundeed thousand dollars worth of the ratepayers property consigned to the flames the plague has, at last, been wiped out of the colony. Hundreds of thousands of dollars
have been asked for the resumption of the Tul- plog-aban property, and perhaps hundreds of thousands more will be required for reforma and preventive measures, to secure un against the recurrence of the plague in the near future, by members of the Santiary Board consisting of amateur vanitarians. Au, opto date hereal, I do not see that the Sanitary Board has shown us a substantial proof or a sore remedy for the care or prevention of the plague, It seems to me that the plague disappoirs as it conses without any traces or warning. Such is always the case with cholera and plagues of all kinds. It is the will of Providence and not the hands of man thai can cope with epidemics. Yet the wi}} of Providence is a mysiecy, men's nature le to battle against fate. Hence medical artistence comes in and thousands have been saved.
The Canton plague maited about the same time as the Hongkong plague. But it disappeared just before Hongkong WAS clean, without costing the Canton Authorilles a cent, and without the services of a Sanitary Board. Naturally, men of commonsense would think that the City of Rams would never get rid of t negligence of
of sanitation. But such has not been the case. Ferhaps the wirescres of our Sanitary Board will kindly enlighten us by explanation as to how the plague disappeared from Canton in a manner that may satisfy many of the property owners and ratepryers who hava suffered much by reason of their valuable services rendered in stamping out the plague, for often heavy expenses were incurred.
