the life-blood of Hongkong's prosperity. G. SHARP is one of the persons who in the intriguing days of old was smart enough to get hold of, at merely nominal prices. many of the best building sites in Hongkong, and principally by this exhibl tion of foresight, aided by the apathy or something worse of successive Govern. ments which allowed these purchases to lie fallow for generations at the public expense, he is reputed to have amassed Immense wealth-which he never worked the "unearned for, but acquired on increment" principle. How be held on to that piece of ground near Kowloon Point for years, without attempting to build on it or improve it in any way, in the hope that the Wharf and Godown Company would be compelled to buy it at his own price, is an instance of Mr. GRANVILLE SHARP's peculiar notions of philanthropy and of his vaunted interest in Hong- kong's welfare, very significant in itself, but too well-known and of too recent a date to require more than a pas ing allusion. It nevertheless shows the kind of man who now has had the ineffable affrontery and vanity to preach through the columns of the Daily Pres thirteen self-laudatory sickening sermons On-G. One of the most remarkable chases after borglars over experienced occorred on Sunday morning in Chespalde, Londen, About 6 o'clock the manager of jeweller's shop in Chespride, who slept on the premises, was awakened by a noise in front. The title of Mr. SHARP's sermons is a misnomer; these unique essays say very little about the Plague and still less as to rational means for its prevention. In fact, this self-sacrificing property owner, forgetting that little anecdote about AHAB and the other man's vineyard and many other similar incidents recorded in history both ancient and modern, is under the impression that the imaginary absolute rights of a number of landlords in the disgustingly filthy and dangerous district of Taipingshan must stand before the health and safety of the community and the commercial prosperity of the port; and he actually occupies over a dozen columns of our morning contemporary in trying to prove that the contemplated destruction by fire or otherwise of that fetid hotbed of disease and death is not necessary, and if it were that it would not be justified as infringing on the sacred rights of property. Mr. GEANVILLE SHAEP has as much right as any rate. payer in this colony to freely express his opinions on this or any other matter of public policy so long as he keeps within the bounds of ordinary discussion, and of commonsense, and if in his objections to the razing of post-stricken Tai-ping-shan he bad confined himself to half-s-column of solid fact and logical argument, instead of The Best and Cheapest Machines in the Macket, wallowing in twelve columns of offensive twaddle and snuffle, with the cloven hoof peeping out almost at every line, even his views would have been fairly considered A.
