Although no harm is likely to be done by deferring the reply to his Excellency's minute until it has been circulated amongst the members of the Board, we quite fail to dee that there is anything very con- [36 troversial in the matter or any reason why a direct answer should not have been given at once. CORRESPONDENCE.

(We do not necesarily endorme the opinions expressed by

Correspondents in chia column),

THE DEATH OF A DOUGLAS CO'S OFFICER AT AMOY,

TO THE EDITOR OF THE "Kosaxona Telegraph." DEAR SIR-In your paper of the 4'b instant, arder the heading "Amoy Notes," appears a the death of an officer of one of the Dougla Co.'s steamers.

Outside the fact that the officer mentioned

paragraph is absolutely false. The gentlemin who died received the unremitting attention of and succeeded with the assistance of the Chinese boy' in getting out of his room into the passare about midnight, but no cater dour was opened, for Mrs. Hauenstein, who had heard a movement below, rasked downstairs, took the man back to his bed, and remained with him until he died about mid-day,

These facts speak for themselves, and I must say it seems very hard that after a woman bad done her utmost for a person who was in the ordinary sense a boarder, such reflections shouldi be cast upon her, especially when it is borne in mind that the place la not a hospital but an hotel, Mr. Hauenuteln has the repotation here, and deservedly so, of being most kind hearted to any one who is sick and stops at ber hotel, us I have no doubt a good many, beside myself, will vouch jor.

Yours faithfully,
