Borneo has been telegraph cally connected with the rest of the civilized globe, and an inestimable boon this will be found when the products of that country find their legitimate places in the markets of the world. It will also give an impetus to the coal trade hitherto undreamt of. It was natural that no British Admiral would care-in such tickilah times as we now live in, to allow vessels of his fleet to go so far from his control as Labuan, with no magic wire to recall them. CHOLERA IN CANTON.

Yesterday the Hongkong Telegraph recolved information from a reliable official source that there was a serious outbreak of cholera in Canton. The Importance of the news made us held it back until we had scared asme details of the actual position of affairs. In response to our inqulelex our Canton correspondent stade the following--

department.

I notice some bitch has occurred to the negotia- tions that were proceeding in Slam, and through which some Japanese hoped to secure land for rice cultivation in that country. What, it is fair to ask, the Chartered Company doing in the matter? Cannot it offer to the Japs, as good paddy-land on belter terms than the Slamese ?

The chief topic of laterent here is the overland telegraph line. Patties of natives are now engaged in searching for a suitable way to bring it through the forests, but a good deal has already been done on the West Coast end. There the country is more open and the progress is com-

paratively rapid. Towards this end, however, the way l'es through forests of immensely tall trees, and the question is how to guard against possible interruption o to the line by fa

timber, or the equally likely

would be to fell the trees back on either side, forming one: long areaur, In which the line would be secure. And for preventing creepers from attaching themselves to the wires, it has been suggested that the land might be cultivated sad something planted that would give a return and help to pay the ap-keep; cotton, for instance. These schemes are now engaging the attention of Governor Creagh.
