THE PLAGUE IN CANTON, A well-informed Canton correspondent, writing under date the fath instant, states that the "bubonic plague" first made its appearance in that City about the last week loj February, and has been raging there ever sincethe first outbreak. Reffable statales of mortailty are hard to obialo, but if we strike a fair general average, we would not err much in putting the total number of deribs down at 200 per day. Of course, this is only an approximate average, for on same days there would be more, and on others fewer deaths. During the latter part of March, and the whole of April, the death rala was at the maximum, reaching to fally 500 per day. Al the commencement (in February) there were but a feme deaths, and the plague was not generally known then; although there is little doubt that it existed. By all accounts, the death rate has decreased, although the scourge is still carrying off large numbers of victims daily.

Our correspondent adds The nature of the disease, and the professional opinions of the me. dical missionades I have spoked to on the subject, are explained in the minutes of the Hongkong Sanitary Board Meeting held in your colony a few days ago, particulars of which appeared in your line of yesterday. The general opinion prevalling among the Chinese here is that a good heavy downpour of tals will do much towards staying the pestilence. This long-con- tinued drought has been most disastrous to this city. Never clean at the best of times, the filth and garbage which have been accumulating in all the streets, and more especially in the can gested portions of the city, have generated foot gares which have poisoned rats as well as human beings. In a few cases aff the inmates of certain houses have been cartled away by the fell com- plaint; some streets have suffered more heavily than others, losing as much as 30 per cent, of the inhabitants. To give an example: Four ceolies would start off in the morning carrying a corpse in a coffin for burial, and return minus

one or two of their comrades, who had died on the way. A mourning relative would be lament- ing the loss of some member of his family, and then soon be laid low and die in a few hours The plague is spreading into the country and to the neighbouring city of Fatskan. To appease the wrath of the fosses who have thus visited the city with their vengeance, all manner of means are resorted to by the priesthood and others. Processions are to be seen every day parading the streets wlih priests chanting their incante- they would sprinkle it through fire-hose with solb. pressure it might do much good.] Partles of men and boys

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, WEDNESDAY, MAY 16, 1894.

While on this subject grant me a little more "space to bring to nolico one more of Hongkong's latest improvements, to a senitary point of view. In the shape of vinilla ing pipes. Where you Europeans erect them I do not know, We Chiness have them on our house-tops 15 meat maddening to have a whiff of the frightfu stench now and then on opening one's window to enjoy little fresh air in the evening. It f annoying too, when you are e testaining one of your guests who does not know that thets exists such an odoriferous and pestiferous opening rear at band. How exasperating It Is to have your guest stars at yeu enquiringly when the smell becames unbearable. However, there is one satisfaction these ventilating pipes afford. us. that is when your neighbour has the impertinence to erect his house bigher than yours ; it is most Consoling then to contemplets his annoyance, and to calculate when he'll get the Plague.

By inserting this in your well-known colemas a great favour will be conferred upon,

Yours truly,

(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)

MACAO, May 14th.

A fin occurred here on Saturday night which but far the promptitude of the brigade, would have been attended with disastrous results. As

it was three Chinese shops were destroyed representing a loss of some $3,000. Luckily the tide was high at the time, so a plentiful supply of salt water was available. Had it been other- wise the damage would undoubtedly have been very heavy,

We of the Holy City are in much the same plight as regards the scarcity of drinking water as you are in Hongkong. The authorities, how ever, are folly alive to the position of affairs and have chartered a number of water-boals from which the people, whose wells have gone qulle dry, can obtain supplies. Every sanitary precaution is being taken here against the Intro. doction of either cholera or the plague. The streets and drains are being flushed out with sex-witer, and a plentiful supply of carbolic solation has been provided by the Public Works Department. THE PLAGUE, IN TAI-PING-SHAN, TO THE EDITOR OF THE "Honakowa TelmariFE." SIR. The Plague is upon us at last! We are all very sorry that it has come, with the exception of a few of my countrymen who are actually of oplelan that the visitation is for our good, and ceem to be getting qalte jahilant over It. The reason they give for forming such an extraordinary opinion is that it was unavoidable, owing to the crowded and Insanitary condition of the localities where It broke out, and that it wl stir the officials ap a bit; farther, that this pestilence comes as a lesson to the Public Works Department, and might one day bring about a relorm in the dininage system and water supply of the colony. Such are the reasons they give for their preposterous sentiments. Poor deluded
