THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, TUESDAY, MAY 1, 1894.

April 24th.. I learn that the bodies so far, recovered at Yang-to and in the Han now number over alx bundred; several have turned up abreast of our Concession, one having been found this morning entangled in the moorings of one of the launches anchored there The water is t running out of the Han like a mill race, but the Yangtze has not sisen much yet. There is a report amongst the natives of a similar disaster some distance inland caused by the Hun, or one of its tributaries, with still greater loss of life. Confirmation and particulars are still cutstandlog. but it is not at all mallkely that the same wave has done more barm, especially where the river is narrower and its fall lager.

WASHINGTON, March 29th.

As predicted in these dispatches before the passage by the Serate of the Bland selgatorage bill, the President to-day vetced the bill. The gold-bugs of this State have confidently awaited this outcome.

The general Impression among Republicans at Washington le, that while there may be con- flictlag opinions as to the merits of the bill, there can be no doubt that its being vetoed will result- in considerable gala to the Republicans in the West.

Silver Republicans desire very much that the anti-aliver man of their party should stand out of the way of the free-coinage bill which will shortly occupy the attention of the Hoare, and allow the President to veto another silver

BOSTON, March 9th, The Supreme Court of Massachusetts decided to-day that a note given in payment of a bet on horse racing is gal and cannot be collected by process of law. The verdict is in the case of fra C. Bride Charles F. Clarke, in which the defendant made a note for $665 for pools on horse race sold in New York. The defence claimed that the consideration was illegal The court holds that there was an error in the charge of the presiding Judge at the trial, and that the defendant was entitled ruling that such gambling was illegal in the State of New York.
