A short time ago when journeying north, I dally met from a dizen to a score of big carts laden 54 cases of the drug, stayed to the simelon with me. From the chief man in charge I computed that the total value of the consignment was about Tls. $5,000. He laformed me also that the district I speak of (Payen-sho-sho) sends to Moukden about 1,000 cases every year, partly for local consumption and partly for transmis sion elsewhere. There were 16 Insurance men in charge of the carts, all armed, and during the night several of them were told off to keep guard over their precious treasure along with the ins watchman.

I do not know if the papers have yet chronicled the following appointments:-Yoan, the Chinese Agent at the Court of Cores, is about to be transferred to the Haikaan Thotaiship of Wên position at Seoul by Pan Total, who has for loh at the Admiralty in Tientsia.
