As, however, I could not obtain from native sources any con firmation of this report, but, on the other hand, was assured by men who were likely to have known about it that no such súpulation wa la existence, I hesitated to give it currency. Of course, granting that the authorities had really lald hold of the guilty partles, no one could say that this punishment erred on the side of severity, but seelor that they have never claimed to have apprehended more than three accused persons, and that the result of all fade- pendent enquiry has gone to show that these ibree were-if concerned in the matter at all, which is highly doubfal-attesly - significant and harmless creatores accing. further, that the other six of the nine persons to be punished, must therefore consist of undoubt edly innocent persons, and probably include the friendly natives who have been detained and tormented in prison for so long in the character of witnesses, it seemed most improb able that any European would stipulate for the perpetration of such grous injustice. There is trouble amounting almost to matiny on the British war ship Canada, now in the West Indies. It has manifested itself since the thip was recommissioned. The matter has been kept a quiet as possible to prevent Its getting into the newspapers.

THE RIGGO HOTEL CASE.
On the opening of the Court, his lordship asid he was inclined to think the defendants were fully justified in believing that all calls on the shares had been paid at the time when the Bank accepted them as security.
Mr. Leach, urged that in such 'n small com- nity as Kobe, everybody would talk over these matters, and the Bank manager must have known the terms of the prospectus, and the arrangement that Mr. Johnson was to accept these shares in payment for the hotel property sold by him to the Company. It roust have been talked about, and he must have known it,
His lordship:-That is a very dangerous theory that because it was talked about, every- body must have knowo. It would depend on Mr. Budd's idiosyncrasy.
Mr. Leach-Well, yes; it might depend on the frequency of his visits to the Club 1 ́
His lordship-Really I cannot allow the polot. Mr. Leach then proceeded to argue that, evan If the Bank could reasonably have believed the shares to be fully paid, the misapprehension was not the Company's fault, and the loss should not fall on the Company; they could only be held label when misrepresentation wan dallberate. His lordship disagreed on this paint also. Mr. Francis addressed the Count at some length.
His lordship reserved judgment.
