Miss Leigh has probably never been in the Ualted States; if she has, abe omitted to caich hold of the well-known and somewhat peculiar, but nevertheless '["ching' accent of the real, living American belreis who is such a pro minent feature in Landon towa—and 10, she was far more of an Englishwoman than one of our attractive cousins from the other side. We shall doubtless soon have an opportunity of gauging this lady's talents in a character out side the region of eccentric comedy. The Lady Jones of Mrs. J. F. Brian was exactly what might have been looked for from such an experienced and recompilabed actress. It was an admirable conception from beginning to and and most skilfully carried out. Miss M. Gregor, leoking her very best, made a most interesting Lucy Greville, and although described on the programme as the English protege of Lady Jones, we are not inclined to find fault with French accent with musical charms which quite disarms captions criticism. In the smaller parts of ladies' maits, Miss Frances Trigge and Miss G. Tassell, did everything possible under the circumstances, and in the amusing scene in the Ginst act rendered most valuable service.

It was an unadulterated pleasure to aes that genuine comedian of the old and useful school, Mr. Henry Kitte, in a class of character which in the East (since John Jack's time) he has made pecullasly his own. Mr. Kitts is always good, and if the second-class cad, Hanbury Hakaa did not afford him many opportunities of scoring, be certainly availed himself of everything available. Mr. Thomas Verner bas in the past done useful work for the Lyrics in this colony, but we question if he ever did any thing so good as the late Judge of the Divorce Court. Exception to bis make up might perhaps bily be taken-be scarcely looked like any one of the antiquated roosters we remember who settled matrimonial differences In the only Lordon court where Hymen's evidence is without Influence-but the character sketch was almost ne to life and reflected credit

on its author. Mr. 1yn Hardi bra been advertised as the ' tar' of the Lyric constellation. He may be so, but, as an honest and impartial cible, we must frankly confess that we have yat to find it out. A goed appearance stage presence, a flexible voice that If better cultured would be more effective, and a gaucharts that in a jeune premier with a Landon reputation is more than surprising-- these were the leading festures of this gentleman's Capt. Bramston of the Guards. We have no desire to be eitheranduly critical, harah, or unfair in chronicling our opinions of professional abllly, and in the case of a debutant (in this colony) like Mr. Harding, we would desire to he as kindly considerate as our niligations to the public admitted; but there never was a Captain of the Guards who walked and talked as the representative of Sir Eustace Bramston did last night, At the end of the second set Mr. Harding's rollicking finale, if a trifle overdone, was really excellent and thoughly merited the applause with which a Horgkong audience always greets artistic efforts, That tried and trus y veteran, Mr. H. Nunn, represented such a life-like General Kennith Blazer, played the character as he alone in the East can play such eccent le parts, that we can only congratulate this sound actor on having retired all the abilitles which gave him's name honored in the highest professional circles more than twenty years ago. Mr. Geo Mailett, who appeared in the colourless part of Archibald Clinton, shapes like a clever juvenile, but we prefer to see him in something where dramatic art is an essential before making an attempt atcriticism, These brainless eincompoops in modern faces must be quite as big a maluance to the conscientious clor as they are to the impar tial critic. Mr. J. F. Millan fa a ways at home on the stage and even in subordinate parts takes poins and displays an intelligence that might with advantage be copied by actors with very much higher aspirations. As costomary, wo have left the most effective, If not the most talented member of the cast to the last-Mr. D. C. Smith, who fretted his weary twenty minutes au Miles, servant to the diverce expert. Any thing better or more anisic, in lis way, has seldom been presented on any 'siago.

The variety show (not by any means a pleasing term) which nightly follows

the piste de resistance is in itself an evening's enjoyable entertainment. Miss Frances Trigge, adeservedly popatze member of the Willard Operatie and Comedy Company to this colony some years ago, Is quite a revelation in her fan dance, quite a novelty in Hongkong, which has already established the young lady in public favour, Mr. D. C. Smith in his excruciatingly fanny parody on The Wearing of the Green something about the unique fashion in which a new Irish Parlin. ment had been or was to be fixed upsimply brought down the house, and the Mammoth Comique responded with a new and original love ditty, the life of which we disremember, When Miss Mare Brian showed the Hongkong play-going public wbst art and tarte could be Introduced into "Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-al," the habitués of the stalls and dreas circles thought

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7, 1894.

STRANDING OF A “BLUE

FUNNEL" STEAMER.

The Ocean Company's steamer Tantalus, Capt. Jones, got aground this morning on the *Nize Fins," on her wwwne from Shanghai to Hoogkong. The news was brought in by the second officer, in one of the ship's boats, and he at once went back in the Dock Company's tag Plist Fích with Mr.W. Ramsay, marine superin- tendent of Messrs. Butterfield & Swire, who ars the local agents for the Ocean Co.

The Tantalus is quite a new steamer bullt on the very latest and ugliest model adopted by the Ocean Co. for their cargo bosts no doubt the very height of utili y and economy. Her net tonnage is given as 2,399, but her carrying capacity is over 4000 tons. She first appeared in Hongkong on the 22nd January last, and went up to Sbaoghal a few days later. She left Shanghal again on the 1st March for Hongkong and home, vld Foschow, Amoy and Swatow ; and from what we have been able to gather she took on board some 1 1oo Chinese coolles an deck passengers at the last named port. Leav. ing Swatow yesterday, she should have been in Hongkong to-day; but shortly before daylight, in a thick tog, she was carried fankore by the current and struck the Nine Flus, about 18 miles north of Hongkong, The current at timen sela Inward very strongly there, and although her compass course might be perfectly correct the set of the tide would imperceptibly take her broadside on to the count.

As soon as it was found that she was hard and fast, the second officer was sent in to Hong- kong for assistance; and, as above mentioned, Mr. Ramsay left about 1pm. in the Dock tag Pilot Fish (Capt. Stopaal) to examine and report, with a view to taking out a salvage party to-morrow at daylight to commence work at once. From the rocky nature of the land and the rather heavy weather lately prevailing out there, it is feared that the Tontains must be in

a bad way; but as atual with Messrs. Batter Gold & Swice, sbsolutely no laformation is voluntarily given.

The C. N. Co.'s stramer Souchow was sent to the assistance of the Tantalus this afternoon, The passengers were all landed here, we believe, by jasks, in the course of the day.

MACAO.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

„Macao, March gið. Mr. Neves Fereira, Minister for the Colonies was elected unopposed to the vacant seat of Diputado representing Macso in the Cortes. He is one of the few men who have honestly tried to do something for the benefit of this city, and he is greatly liked here in consequence. His principal efforts were la promoting the National Lyceum about to be opened here, in organising a company of artillery for Macao, and in the reduction of the Mexican dollar rate from 850 rais to 640 reis. The one hope of the Colony is that he will now do equilly good work and attala equal success in the direction of having Macao barbour dredged; for the silting-up of the port has now reached such a pitch that it will can be absolutely imposible to save even the last vestige of our once valuable trade. The Cortes ought to have sente enough to know that they are, if not actually killing the gors that lays the golden eggs, at any rate allowing it to die of suffocation!

There have been rumours that the authorities bere were proposing, immediately on the arrival of the new Governor, Major Horta a Costa (about the 24th of March) to Institute negotiation with the Chloess Government, in the hope of inducing China to favour the emigration of coolies from Macao to Brazil or elsewhere. However, the notification recently lasued by the Commissioner of Customs seems to have knocked all that on the head; I saw some reference to it in your columns, and I can sasure you that it created a great flutter in official circles here, for it. is regarded as a final veto, à death-kaell to the Macao emigration trade.

I regret to have to record yet another extibl. li1n of tyranny on the part of Dr. Medeiros, Bishop all Macao. One of the best educational institutions (in some respects) in this Colony was the French Conveat school, which has always been conducted in an exemplary manner, and has constituted a standing reboke to those who declaim against popery med priests. The French Convent school. was really a model establish ment, and the good sisters a model of Christian charity, Medeiros has closed the content and ordered the Sisters to leave the Colony Immedli. ately! No 10110 is given for this sudden actions sudden as to be positively brutal. Apparently his own schools and convents suffer so much by comparison with the French that he cannot tolerain them. It le men like this Medeiron who create atheists and enemies of the Church,

LONDON, February 4th, The marriage of Lord Burton's not ravishingly beautiful daughter, Mi Nellie Bass, has attracted far greater attention than usual, chiefly from the runificence with which the bridegroom has been treated. The great brewer magnate paid off all this and settled $50,000 a year on the young couple to go $400,000 a year more.
