The causes which led to this abandonment were best known to Sir Edward blomself, and at any rate the court-martial oo blin and his officers absolved them from all blame. In the same year, too, the steam gun. restal Fasper was burnt in the Channel, and in the following year, by a custous colecidence. another gunbost of the same name was wrecked in the sea of Azoff Two other ships were wrecked the same year also, namely, the schooner Bermuda in the West Indies, and the sloop Wolverine. The former ablp was lost through faulty navigation, and the latter one through the officer of the watch being asleep and not sober; he was in consequence dismissed the

In 1856 the brig-aloopNebudda was lost at sea, and her end was nover known. There are good grounds for supposing, however, that the was an Unseaworthy old tub, for it is a significant fact that no less than three athers of the same class and tonnage, namely, the Sopfhe, Haron, and Camilia were lost through foundering at sea,

Chinese labour continues to pour in, several new buildings of some importance are being erected in town, shops which have been vacant for months, are gradually being reopened, and altogether there seems to be a revival of prosperity,

With the return of dry weather, work is being pushed, on energetically throughout all the tobacco estates; felling and clearing la In full progress, and matshed material is being got ready in vast quantities. All is setivity, Jór | there are brighter and more solid hopes now than ever before.

From Sooloo comes the news that the classically named Haroun-al-Raschid has been deposed from the Sultanate and packed off to Palawan by the Spaniards, and Amir-al-Kirim reigns in his stead. This change will be hailed with joy by the Sooloos, who regard Amir-al- Kidimas the rightful heir; the usurpation of Haraun-al-Raschld led to constant rebellions on a small scale and a good deal of bloodshed. The reason for the alteration is not very apparent, as Haroun always served the Spaniards well. Sad to say, disinterested symathy for native sentiment is the very last motive with which the Spaniards could be credited.

The year 1881 was notable for the less under most extraordinary circumstances of the loop Doiert. The ship, which was at the time on her way out to the Pacific Station, was suddenly blown up by an unexpected explosion in the Straits of Magellan. It is supposed that an explosion of gas in her bankers communicated with the magazines, there being two distinct explosions. The ship was blown to pleces, and large proportion of her officers and crew were

The captain was saved by the pre-E Company's Steamship sence of mind of the sentry on the cabin door, who tunbed tà and pushed him through the port Into the water before the second explosion occurred. The next wear witnessed the loss of sister ship to the Dotarel, namely, the sloop Phanic, off Prince Edward's Island, through faulty navigation. Fortunately none of her crew were drowned. In 1883 again, the paddla vessel Lively was lost of Stornaway, also through faulty navigation, but with the loss of no lives. The year 1884 was marked by the wreck of the gan bost Wasp off the coast of Ireland, and only six men out of a total complement of 58 officers and men were saved.

The name of Wash was a particularly ev one, for the next naval disaster, which occurred in 1887, was the total loss, evidently in a typhoon, of the new gunboat of that name while on the passage from Singapore to Hongkang. Although ieveral abips were sent to search, not a sign of vestige of the unfortunate vessel was CTES #OCD

In the latter case seven men were drowned. The Sulion, as is well-know, was eventually raised. The sad wreck of the cruiser Serpent on the rocks off the north coast of Spain, whe aby only three men were saved out of a total comple: memory, and prior to the awful disaster to the ment of 176 afficers and men, is still fresh in our Victoria is the last ship to the category of naval disasters for the past half century,

At the end also of the same year, the gunboat Lively was lost on the coast of Holland with a large proportion of her officers and crew. The year 1864 is rendered memorable by the loss, with many lives, of the gun-vessel Racshorts, and the line-of battle ship Bombay. The former ship was wrecked in the Gulf of Pechill, about 15 miles of Cheloo Cape. The crew were sent aft, told the position of the ebip, and that if they could hold on till daylight they would probably be rescued. The coll

ton was brought about by a grave error to judgment on the part of the Amason's officer of the watch, and resulted in the total loss of both vessels. In the same year the gun voitel Grifon was lost on the rocks off the west coast of Africa, after collision with the Pandora. Between 1866 and 1870, four vessels were lost, namely, the Osprey, Rattler, Geat, and Ferra, | the first three on account of faulty navigation, The latter ship, which was used as a training ship, was lost in a storm, and 80 saller lads aboard her narrowly escaped with their lives.
