THE WRECK OF THE "PAKAN"*

Early in the morning of the 15th Instant signals of a ship ashore on the Suften Shoul were, according to the Singapore Free Press, holsted at the flagstaffs of Fort Canning and Mount Faber, The vessel in distress turned out to be the stormer Pakan, owned by Messrs. Wee Bla & Co. a small steamer of 85 tons burthen trading between Singapore and Pakan under command of Capt. A. B. Millar.

The Pakas left Singapore on the 14th as muni, with a general cargo, a crew of as and 40 passengers for Bengkalis, Sisk and Pa kan. Abrat eight o'clock she struck on the Sulian Shoal and remained faston ber starboard side, despite all efforts to get ber off. At high tide at 3.32 .m. she failed to get off, and as the tide fell again she listed so much that she foar dered, at half past eight on the morning of the 15th in three fathoms of water.

Continuing, our contemporary says:-" At day. break Mr. D. Cowan, the manager of the Palan Bukum Oll Works, went to her assistance with bis launch and a tongkang. He took off the crew and passengers, a small quantity of deck cargo and some of the passengers' luggage, but cathing of great moment

The Pakan is a vessel about twelve years old, and the owners have every hope of being able to raise her. A launch is standing by her, with the ship's boat, her crew, and tongkangs. How she could have got ashore Is rather a mystery. as it was a beautifully clear moonlight night. No explanation of the mishap has been offered.
