SUICIDE ON THE PEAK ROAD. About seven o'clock yesterday evening a Sikh constable named Nehall Singb, No. 553. com- mitted suicide on the Peak Zigzag, just above Queen's Gardens, by shooting himself through the abdomen with his cabins. The deceased, a Punjabes, went on duly at six o'clock last night, and when he decided to explore the regions of the Great Unknown was in company with two other Indian constables, who had observed * nothing wrong with their comrade. Suddenly the hapless man made an excuse for dropping behind his companions and a mlaste or two later they heard a gunshot report close by. Turning back to see what was the cause of such ari undal occurrence, they found Neball Singh lylug on the road, face downwards, with his Carbine almost under him. Turning him over, "they found he was bleeding profusely from
woond in the abdomen, and that he was apparently stone-dead, while an examination of his wespon and ammunition pouch revealed the fact that it was his own sifte that had been fired off, and that one out of the regulation ten round of ball cartridge was mieslag.. Thus it became clear to the unfortunate man's comrades that he had committed suicide and that nothing remained to be done but for one of them to guard the body while the other hurtled to the Central Station to procuHIE RA ambulance. This was done without delay,' and the body was promptly removed to the Mortuary, whence it was taken to the Mahommedan bury- ing-ground at Happy Valley this sitemoon and duly interred.
The deceased, who has two besthers in the local Force, joined the Hongkong Police about two years ago and at the time of his death was About 23 years of age. He bore an exemplary character, and no cause for the rash act can be assigned by any one who knew him. He was in good healib, good spirits and getting along in the risks as well as he could reasonably expect, facis which tend to envelop last night's tragedy in complete mystery. There is at present nothing to show whether he did or did not premeditate the act; the Daily Prest states that he must have "surrepildously lo served a cartridge in bis carbine before leaving the Central Sation, but there was nothing sar
repitious about I
An inquiry will be held at an early date.

This damage, we are of opinion, might have been caused by collision with a deeply laden ship; | the steamer St. Asaph, bound from Mojito Hong kong, was at or about this spot when the collision took place, and as she has not been heard of store, the conclusion is forced on the Court that she was the other vessel that was in collision, and it would appear that if so the same has proved fatal to her. We are of opinion that the master of the Hangchow fully recoguled the esty of standing by after the collision as long as the safety of his own vessel and the liver on board were not unduly endangered thereby, also that the steps taken by him were all taken with this erd in view but while recognising the danger to the Hangchow we regret that the master should have decided to leave the scene of the disaster without even more strenuous efforts being made to discover what bad become of the other vesselskipping the country. The Court do not deal with the certificates of the master or officers and they are therefore returned to them.

AN UNUSUAL EMBEZZLER.
"Sensation" was no sufficient word to exprona the consternation that cycloned Bigtown when it became known that Martin Maxborough, the popular secretary of Pigtown General Boom Co., Ld, had been arrested as a defaniter, What? Martin Maxborough an embezzler? Impossiblet You couldn't suspect Martin of dishonesty if you tried ever so much. He never went to church and mufled; he never shirked his liquor at festival or funerals Ads "birthdays" were the most filuminating things Bigtown ever know; he always "drank fair "; ka gambled and swore, and was so utterly above-board about What! Him a thief? Neverl
Yet, there it stared Bigtown in the face in the evening papers. And the said "it" amounted to £120,000 Bigtown was doubled up and went on a collective drunk.
A meeting of the Bigtown General Boom Co. was at once called, and everyone who had a balance of 41d. rolled up, far, in face of such a calemity, shareholders, depositors, and rank ont- siders were merged in ana band of brotherhood and excitement.
Chairman of Directors Blummer presided and swayed the mind of the meeting with his blunt and feeling eloquence.

The following is the full text of the Marine Court's finding, which, owing to the late hour of it delivery, we briefly summarised yesterday
We and that the Britisk steamer Hongchow, oficial number 91,878, of London, of which Charles James Derby was master, the number of whose certificate is 68,040, left Hongkong in ballast bound for Shanghal on the morning of February 8th last ; that all went well till about II p.m. when off Breaker Point the Hangchow was in collision with an unknown vessel. It ap. from the evidence that the masthead light of the unknown vessel was first sighted by the second officer about a point on the past bow, and he, after watching it for some time, came to the cunclusion that the vessel carrying it was cross ing him and he therefore ported about peint, About five minutes after this he saw the thren lights of the approaching vessel about point on his port bow and not more than two ship's lengths off. He then ordered the helm hard-a. port and stopped the angloss, going down him self at that time to call the Captain. About minute from the time of his stopping the engines the collision occurred, the Hangshow striking the stranger slanting blow about so evidence from the other side the Court do not smidabips on the starboard side. There being concern themselves with expressing an opinion as to the causes which led to the collision, merely observing that the action of the second eflcer in porting on the first occasion probably | did not increase the danger of the position,

It was a masterpiece of strategy, Blummer continued: "I took the liberty of ordering the drinks beforehand, and we'll dump them in along with poor Martin's defalcations, He won't mind it; his heart is too noble for that I sounded him on the subject and he said that he falt honoured by the proposition, since it might never be his luck again to ask any of bis clients to wet the other eye.
