The officials connected with the Supervijorate. wreck they found there was indescribable. The chart-room was a total wreck, enval-ped in smoke from the rockets and the smouldering cashlans, Where the rocket-locker had stood was a hole some two feet square, where the planks and plates had been blown bodily away; the kitchen was utterly wrecked, the wheel of the steam steering gear torn off, and books, clothing, chronometers, sextants, telescopes, &ce, a mere heap of debris. Not a thing had escaped. On the bridge overbead, the light deck had been torn into splinters, the iron rai ings warped and twisted, and the tinnacle upset and broken. The severity of the explosion may be gathered from the fact that the concussion was feit fully half-a-mile away; lamps were extinguished in Messrs, Windsor & Co's. premises, leaden window weights were blown ashore, the funnel and ventilators were perforated as if by hullets, and pieces of fran were embedded deep in the life beats. Had the accident occurred when the officers were at dinner, either in the mess-room or on the bridge, severs if dalities must inevitably have occurred, as the rackets seem to have swept the deck diagonally, besides creating chaos In the mess room by their downward force. Luckily no one was eliber there or in the cook-house, and there is no personal Injury whatever to record. Capt. Unsworth and his officers bave lost lestruments worth a considerable amount, whilst extensive repairs will be needed when the vessel returns to Hongkong, apart from the replacing of the chronometers, compasses, and parts of the steering-gear, which will have to be done here, and which will probably delay the vessel several days.
An Inquiry into the circumstances of the explo- sion was held in the British Consulate on the 18th, and the following verdict was recorded by Mr. French" My own opinion of the matter is that the explosion is due to the corrosion of the Iran plates which appear to have been in close proximity to the stove pips. By that means the deck was set on fire from the heat of the stove, and the fire reached the explosives and caused the explosion. The disaster therefore was pilo elpally due to the fasily construction, of the galey,"
