THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, MONDAY, JANUARY 29, 1894.

KOWLOON LAND AND BUILDING | gate. To Lung and En P'e, Commandants of

CO., LIMITED.

The ordinary general meeting of shareholders in this Company was held to-day. Mr. J. H. Cox presided, and there were also present Messis. J. Goosmano, E. Jones Hughes (direc Lors), A. S. Hooper (secretary), J. M. E. Machado, H. J. Holes, and H. E. R. Hunter.

The Stcietary read the notice of meeting, The Chairman sald:-Gentlemen, the report and accounts having been in your hands far some days I will, with yourpermission, consider them as read. So little time has clapsed since the dale of the issuing of the report that we have nothing farther to say than what is mentioned therein; but before proposing the adoption of the report and accounts shall be glad to answer any questions within my power. But first of, gentlemen. I will read a memorandum of the auditors, addressed to the Secretary: We are of option that a commencement should be made in the current year to provide for depreciation on the Company's buildings and to meet the cost of exceptionally heavy repairs, by approplating a portion of the profits to a reserve or depreciation fund. The Company has now been in exla tence for five years, and nothing has yet been done in this direction." I may mention that it is not usust to form a reserve fond in connection with buildings, but if the shareholders wish it to be done the directors will be happy to meet their wishes.

Mr. Holmes-Mr. Chairman, I have heard what you have read with regard to the propssel of the auditors for reserve fund against depreciation of property, but as a large share holder submit it is perfectly unnecessary. It is unusual to have a reserve fund except in ship. ping matters. For my part I am strongly of opinion that things should go on without any such fund.

The Secretary mentioned that the property was kept up in repair and repairs were wilten off every year.

There being no farther remarks or questions, the Chalmian proposed the adoption of the repert and accounts.

Mr. Holmes:-Nefore recanding the motion I would like to ask if the directors have con-

ask if

cot band, 9,000, could he invested more profitably. It brings only $3 per cent, at present, whereas there are certain good investments to the Colony where at least 7 per cent, may be obtained. I mention this for the consideration of the direc ters, as it has been spoken of outside, and I think it right to call your attention to it. Subject to these remarks I have much pleasure in seconding

the metinn.

The report and accounts were then carried

unanimously.

On the motion of Mr. Machado, seconded by Mr. Hunter, the retiring directors (MeriTS. Hughes and Giesmann) were re-elected.

On the motion of Mr. Hunter, seconded by Mr. Holmes, the auditors (Messrs. R. Lyall and T. Arnold) were re-elected.

The Chairman:-That concludes the business, gentlemen, and I am elad to inform you that dividend warrants wil be ready to-morrow and will be given you on application.

The proceedlags terminaled with a vote of thanks to the Chairman, moved by Mr. Holmes,

Everything is quiet in Soul, according to Istest advices. A change in the chlel command of the troops there is locked for at an early date, the present commander-in-chief being said to he pressing too strangly for bis arrears of wages. The missionary medical work flourishes in Soochow. Dr. Hart has charge of the men's hospital and Miss Anne Walter, M.D., attends to the women. Mrs. Campbell, who has been In Chini several years, is manager of the women's hospital. Dr. Walter is a new missionary, but the work she is doing is phenomenal and a cree in which she effccled a care of a native lady of high social standing brought her into wide and favourable notice. Young, cathustastic, prompt, unwearled and skilful, she responds to every call by day or night and is kept busy. The patients who come to the hospital are treated without charge. But when the lady doctor is called the homes of her patients the fee is five dollars. This is paid gladly and sometimes there are seven or eight cases in a day. The chair-bire is heavy expense, for Dr. Walter requires two chairs, one for herself and one for her inter preter, young Chinese woman bom Mrs. Campbell has had in training for several years, After deducting beavy picentage for chair- hire there still remains a handsome Income, which I need not say goes into the mission treasury, and aids greatly in supporting the hospital.

For twenty years there has not been so much sickness as was seen during the latter half of 1893. From all parts of the country there come reports that are distressingly monotonous; suffer. log everywhere. One of the missionaries Hving ia this city, not a physician, distributed quinine on one day, along a circuit of twenty-five miles, to two hundred and sixty patients; in nearly every case the mediclae was given to the sufferer, The amount of ague has somewhat decreased, but it is sill great. In July and August the peasants drink unbolled water dipped out of the canals. They are in the fields working under a burning sun and are too impatient to boil the water. This accounts for the great numbers of cases of ague and dysentery. We are not having any winter weather. In the middle of January the mosquitoes came buzzing about my cara cue day as I walked along the sunny side of the city wall. If there were more frost there would be less ague.-N. C. Daily News.

settled down once again to their quiet roulee of toll. Nothing very special took place during the festive season. There were a few official dinners given, at which the usual speeches were made and the urual toasts drunk, but they left very little impression upon those who were present at them, The Japanese appeared to be unusually subdued, for some reason or other, during the holiday season; the quarter luhablied by them wore an air of depression very strange for our lively neighbours at this time of the year. All this is due, no doubt, to the bad state of Japan- ese trade. But if our Christmas and New Year have been quiet here they have been exciting enough in the provinces. At Pingrang, for instance, there was a small rebellion, the people rising en masse against the officials, who they thought were squeezing them, some of the local taxes having been increased. A disturbance PRICE THREE DOLLARS. also took place at Tongdo, the ancient capital of the country, where the people surrounded the Orders for Copies of THE "HONGKONG Governu's yamen and slaughtered some of the DIRECTORY" may be sent to the following runners. From the above Sistement it will be seen that the Company pays the Old Company (in shares) considerably less than their outlay for the pur- chase of the properties and machinery,

"It is believed that the properties above-men- tioned contain very valuable mines-this ballef being based on the following grounds:

(4.) The favorable reports which have from time to time been mide on the property by Mesme. Cox and SEAVER, and Mr. HENDER. SON, Independent mining experts of good standing and repule in Australia. Extracti from these reports accompany the Pros pectos, and the reports themselves, togelber with Plans of the properties, are open to inspection at the Office of the Liquidator, No. 1, Duddell Street, Hongkong. From these and from the extracts from the report of Mr. CARL WILKILM GEORG, the Liqui: dator of the Old Company, it appears that there is a consensus of opinion, on the part of these acqualated with the facts, that these are valuable miolog properties.
