As exemplifying the strong hold of the "chopped" dollars on the Chinese we may mention that the Banks here never pay away clean dollars in any quantity- If they are short of "chopped" dollars, they set to work and deface a lot of clean dollars. There is a two-fold object in this; the first is to ensure the coin only circulating in Canton and at the Coast ports and to prevent shipments to the Straits or Shanghal; and secondly to give the natives in the provinces confidence in the coin, as they are accustomed to "chopped" and not clean dollars.
On the whole, after carefully reviewings, however, for he was followed by the cox. all the circumstances, we have come to towards him. After this the courageous Sikh swain who, it was alleged, used filthy language the conclusion that the report of the Special agats tried to board the launch but being Committee, of the Chamber of Commerce repelled made a beeline for the Magistracy and is incomplete and does not go with took out a summons, charging Kwok with sufficient fullness into all the pros and cons, obstructing bim la the performance of his duty. and also under-estimates the laying down It appeared to Mr. H. The idea of a British dollar Is good in its way, but when we consider that we are merely an entrepot for the trade of neighbouring provinces of China, ft Is absolutely necessary to take their predi- fections into account. The "chopped" Mexi cans they have, the Japanese yen they are already quite accustomed to, although it is not legal tender here, and the British dollar, if allowed to be "chopped," might In time be received freely also; but, as we have said before, its introduction is a accessible supply, and therefore would be pure matter of cost.
