PASSENGERS BOOKED FOR

THE FAR EAST,

This is supposed to be a "dreas Stewards of the Jockey Club. The principal Gam Almacigs, plevis rehearsal of actual warfare, and is called reason relied on for this innovation was that, mobillallon.

awing to the scarcity of capable jockeys, a stalls when such events at the Valley Stakes considerable number of griffins would be in their and Gorman Cup were belog contested. The Stewards duly met and it was anaalmously decided to add the extra rece asked for on the first and second days, but they did not consider it advisable to make any addition to the Programme of the third day, on the very reason- able grounds that it would be most undesirable to risk having the "Champions "un in the dark and that there were already three races limited to subscription ponies. The following are the conditions of the new events; ----

Early last Tuesday morning as enemy's fleet was reported as approaching Hongkong (apparently Gap Rock and D'Aguilar commun- cations were not interrupted) and Dr. Debarck holsted all the typhoon drums and other appurtenances in stock, and issued a notice "pradients steep for those who can't bolt over the Kowloon hills. By midday hostile squadrons had lined-up off the East and West entrances of this beautiful harbour, and opened fire on the forts. After a few heavy shots, the hillskie was so shaken that half of Victoria Feak fell down, and thus the forts were safe in that quarter anyhow-though their ventilation was a fallure. However, by some mears known only to the military authorities, they managed to return the enemy's fire, and kept out the "Intruders till Wednesday: A combined allempt was then made to land on the South Shore, and in Ly-ee- moan Bay, and to disable the submarine minen by cutting the wires at the shore ead. But the foe was in the soup every time, All the men in the garlson were hard at work about the points of attack, except the Government House sentry, who was asleep. During Wednesday night some of the enemy's ships managed to "run" Ly-ee-mon (though an laexperienced civilian would have thought the Western Channel much caster) and began to play kitils with the sugar refinetles, docks, naval yard, and other prominent marks. One fiery untamed war ship rammed the Victor Emanual and the V. R. C. bathing pastoon, and then pro- ceeded to "zon amuck all over the harbour, sicking sampans and jumping on junks like a load of bricks. An attempt was made to capture Bay View, but "Brownie" had got there before them, so they fled. Meantime a few of the visitors had got ashore in Mira Bay and "hooled It" over the hills, intent on ralding the gambling houses at Kowloon and Sam-sui-po, but the Indians of the Hongkong Régiment turned out and executed their jusly-celebrated war-dance, es ough! During the day repeated attempts were made to land at various bathing-placeson the South Shore, but the Tytam Tiger was on the war-path every time. At last, however, the slitstion grew serious; it was ad sight as long as they didn't get ashore, and the Regulars could safely "cock-a-nook" at them from long range; but when they did get a footing the position was desperate, and only the Volinteers could save the British Empire, Stonecutters' island was captured, and it was in recapturing it that the H.K.V. did their cele brated M'Ginty set" off the stone pler, a recorded in these columns last Thursday, Next day the invaders, beaten off at every point, con- centrated their attention on Alexander Bay (com monly called "Sandy"forbrevity). The Volunteers put in some big licks, and shot a dog, out of pro enthusiasm. Finally, on Saturday a grand attack was made all along the line, and every fort and station was fully manned. The enemy was wiped out, the General want round and found everything satisfactory, the hostile ships in the harbour were run in for carrying dangerous goods without permit, and everybody went home, thed out, but not so wet as last year, thank heaven 1

TRAINING NOTES.

FIRST DAY, 22ND FEBRUARY.

The ENCOURAGEMENT STAKES; Sweepstakes of $5 each with groɔ added; for subscrip tlon griffes of this season, 1893-94, only; first and second ponies in any previous -Taces at this Meeting excluded; weight for lacher. First pony, 70 per cent.; second, 20 per cent ; third, 10 per cent. Once round.

SICOND DAY, 23RD FEBRUARY.

The GYMKHANA STAKK3; Sweepstakes of $t each with $100, (presented by the Gymkhana Committee) added; for subscription griffins of this seasons, 1893:94, only; frit and second ponies in any previous race or races at this meeting, and previous non-starters, excluded; weight for inches. Ponies that have been placed third, 5 lbs. extra; first | pony, 70 per cent, second, ao per cent.; third, to per cent.. One mile.

It will be observed that the Gymkhana Com mittee has added $100 to one of thoraces, Ibadly focline to the view that the conditions of these two exira events are all that could be desired, expecially as regards poules placed in previous races being debarred or penalised, Why, for instance, should the owner of the third in the Valley Stakes, who doesn't receive a cent for occupying that barren honour, be deprived of a privilega accorded to other owners, whose ponies may be of superior class, but are not ridden out? And again, whay sense is there in excluding previous non-starters? | The suggestion is, of course, obvious, and it fa not very complimentary to the status and racing morality of Jockey Club that is assumed to be exclusively composed of gentlemen and sportsmen.
