States, sayi the S. F. Bulletin of November 15th, were it loose on gold colange last mootb, and the result is the largest output in years, The total amount of gold coined in October is $9,504,800, including $1,360,000 in "double cigles, $5,68,200 in "eagles," and $2,576,600 in "half-eagles." The large amount of eagles and half-cogies is particularly noteworthy. There is good reasen for this large gold coinage. The amount of gold colu in Government vaults has been reduced to $66,616,950, the smallest total in many years. There is a large supply of goid bullion on hand. On the rat there were $95.657350 in gold bars in the_vanlis. Orders have been given to the Mint officers to keep up the actly in this coinage. It is predicted that $20,002,000 of this bullion will be coined in November and December. It will be well to put the whole amount Into coln as rapidly as possible. This is the only way in which it can be used for currency purposes. Besides, if the bullion Es turned Inta calo, there will be less profit in shipping it abroad.

The following evidence wan led :—

Lucas Castro said he was 22 years of age, lived In Peel Street and was unemployed. On the › instant between to aid 17`a m., he was'nt No. 15. Maique Junction visiting, and while there saw the defendant strike witness' brother with

his hand. Witness shouted out asking why he truck his brother and was told by the defer- dant that it was because the youngster throw stones at blm, Witness remonstrated and was then himself struck by the defen- dant with a thick_walking-stick.” The blow knocked witness down and he lay on the ground senseless for fally half a minute. Subsequently, haring armed himself with a broom, wiincissallied forth, attacked Taufer and got the walking-stick (now in Cour1) away from bim. He took out a summons ag-inst Tufer on the 4th instant,

He was not one of the youths who created a diatur- bance in the defendant's house four months ago. Her brother was annoyed and shouted to Taufer-" Shut up, you old rascal!" Then the defendant told Ico, her brother, to come down | Into the street, which he did, and was struck on the head and rendered senseless. Defendant also strack another of her brothers, There could be no doubt about defendant intending an insult. He was, in fact, in the habit of acting in a similar masner towards her,

Cross-examlocd,-Witness and her brothers' always tried to avoid Tauler, They never called him bad names.

Ico Castro, school boy about 16 years of age, said he had not been more than two minutes at the window before Tanfej, came in sight. When near the house Tauler lasulted witness' sister. Then witness called the defend ant an "old rascal" which was followed by an invitation from him to go down to the street.. He went down and was abraulted by Taufer, who also struck his brother with the slick (produced In Court). After that witness' sister told him to fetch a constable, which ha did,

number of dancers had to 'stand down' for lack of room. However, taken altogether, the säkir was a most enjoyable one, and the youth and beauty of Hongkong have seldom been so would almost seem to be quite an epidemic of strikingly and favorably represented. There female loveliness all over the colony just at present.

The popular President of the Institute, Mr. D. Gillies, M L.N.A., was very much in evidence, and the Hon. J. J. Keswick Poked, as if he would gladly oblige with "Ghillie Caliom" or "Hualachan" at the slightest pro vocation, Mr. R. Mitchell, the ho“, secretary, was most attentive in every direction, and no

praise could be too much for the Stewards; and,

unlike the ordinary sort of stewards at Hong- org dances, these gertlemen understood their obligations and p rförmed them.

Bandmaster Murphy and the Shropshire Light Infantry musicians played in splendid form, although it must be admitted they got a bit mixed up in the Strathspey and Reel, which cha-te morcaw they had to tackle on very short police, the man with the pipes not turning up as expected. A more thoroughly enjyable evening's entertainment havrarely been seen in Hongkong.
