FOOCHOW NOTES.

Foochow, 30th December, 1893. The river fleet of this port has been farther augmented by nine new war junks, lately con- stracted at a cost of about $100 each.

A telegram from Hang-chow, the capital city of Che-kisng province, was received by the Chinese authorities on the 27th instant stating that the Governor, a Mancho, died suddenly on that day without showing any symptoms of sickness.

It is surprising to bear that the Viceroy has beca recalled to Peking to answer some ten accusations against him, one of which is being too much given to "squeering." We cannot believe it to be true. However, such Is tha rumour at present current among the people.

It is now many months since we have heard Auping of any trouble being given by pirates on the corst, but this week the crew of a Chinese jonk laden with timber for Ningpo returned and, reported that the junk and its cargo had been captured by sea-robbers. No personal harm was done to the crew. The authorities have sent out notice of the occurrence to the guard Acet.

It may interest some of our readers to know that two enterprising pečmigians in ascending to Kallang & short time since, took the trouble to ascertain the number of steps leading upwards from the Joss House at the foot of the bills. They found that there are 3.136 steps to be mounted before 2,150 it, is reached, which is about the height of the level of the Kuliang residences.

The fear of the native bankers, when at firti the Government ten-cent'pi-ces were introduced, that many false coins would appear, has turned out to be well founded. We understand that a large number of spurious coins are in circulation. The authorities are making exinest search for the caluers, but we fear it will end unsuccessfully, as such cases usually do, the profit of the yamea runners being too good for them to divulge the secret and arrest the men.

A similar case to one we reported sometime ago, took place lately, The Pervincial Judge, on his way out to Naztal to verify the failure of dative bank, met two natives waiking along the street, each with an arm round the others nick. He at once stopped his chair and ordered the arrest of the two men, who were delivered to the tipas, with orders that they should be kanguid for one month and be carried through the streets during that period in a double kangue, His Excellency looks upes such practices as Immoral, and to punishes the delinquents, severely..
