Museum a fine set of well-preserved polished Prince Damrong has presented to the Royal stone hatchets found at Huang Prabang. They stros ly resemble those from North America and probably belong to the last (neollibic) period of the Stone Aga. They are to be seen in the Museum at the end of the Paleontological Collection.

On Friday evening, at the Pu Kan Thong festivities, a Siamese woman was robbed of a gold chain which she wore over the left shoulder and under the right arm. A man trod on her foot and then snatched the chain away, causing greet Injury to her breast. Another woman, after dining at the end of the stalls, was blindfoldet by two men, who took from hor Ginger a diamond ring valved at goo tos.

Yesterday morning's tide, an old hand assures was the highest for twenty years. On Thurs- day the breeze was north-westerly, and the water on the bar was some luches under twelve feet but on Friday the wind veered round and backed the water up fa the Gulf so much that at 4 pm there were fourteen feet on the bar, whilst yester day it was probably very liute short of sixteen, at Bigh tide. The result was a general foundation town, lasting half the day. The electric tram cars stopped early in the morning, for over three hous, through the power-stailon being feded, and by ten o'clock fish were swimming | scross the Oriental Avenue in water six lachen deep. Everywhere the compounds and roads were flooded, and is not a few instances residents were unable to get out of their houses. The Consulates were practically inaccersible for hours. The tides should begin to fall now, however.

Yesterday the adjourned hearing of a British, Indian trader's application for discharge came before Mr. French, at H B.M. Consulate. His estate had paid a dividend of nearly 35 per cent. A number of Bambay creditors, who opposed the application, were represented by Messrs. Micheli and Page, and Mt. Tilleke appeared for the bankrupt. After a number of hearings, daring which the bankrupt's aff its were minutely investigated, Mr. French decided yesterday that no fraud or other misdemeanour could be charged to the bankrupt, and that

though he had not been ever-carefol in keeping his books, they were sufficiently clear to show the discharge, but suspended its operation for his dealings, His Honour thereupon granted

two years, as under the new Bankruptcy laws the judge had no discretia to reduce period of suspension in cases where a bankrupt's existe did not pay dividend of 50 per cent Stam Observer.

maintain a factory In Yokohama for the Manufacture of Watches of all kinds and des. criptions.

of a plant of machinery complete in avery The founders of the Company are possessed particular, of the newest deilga and the finest workmanship, and adapted for the making of all Implements used in the watch trade as well a the making of watches. It is well known that machinery has effected a complete revolution in the watch trade and it is confidently expected that by avalling itself of the comparatively cheap labour of this country this Company will be able to supply the trade in all parts of the world with an article which for excellence of workmanship and cheapness of price will defy competition.

Mr. P. H. Wheeler, the Superintendent of the : Company, has been for many years engaged in developing watch-making machinery, and the Lestimonials from his former employers testify to his business ability, skill, and integrity. The machinery of which the founders sro possessed has been perfected, under his superintendence and a considerable part thereof is of his inven tion.

Besides the Machinery, the founders are possessed of ten thousand watches in various stages of completion which are the out-tum of the said Machinery; and material on hand sufficient to torn out about twenty-five thousand more. It will thus be seen that it is not an untried plant which the founders have acquired, but one which has already given proofs of its excellence. It was only the advantage of obtain ing a cheaper labour market than can be found In the United States that has induced them to work the business in Japan.

It is an artablished fact that the principal factories in the United States in seven years paid 300 per cent, dividend on a capital of Six Million Dollars; and that was done on a wage |basis of $1.50 (gold) per operative, the factores employing six thousand hands. If the difference In the rate of labour in this country is taken into consideration the operations of the Company will be assured to realise to the fail the expects. tions of the founders. The profits of watch- making are based entirely on the price of labour. It is not in the labour market only that an advantage will be obtained, Coal and other materials can be purchased in this country st a lower rate than in the United States. And

there fe one of still greater importance, the beldes all these advantages, which are great,
