SIR THOMAS SUTHERLAND When Thomas Sutherland entered the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Naviguin Co. service in 1852, say a writer in the Australian Star, he was a lad of eighteen. But his energy and ability soon asserted themselves, and Induced his employers to despatch him to Chius, where he bad entire
gentus for grasping the needs of a situation resulted in a considerable extension of the business in that part of the world. Nat did his energy exhaust itself in the work of the P. and O. office. Young Sutherland identified himself with various local enterprises of couse- quence. He was practically the founder of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, which has become the most powerful body of its kind connected with the East, both in polat of influence and capital. The Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Co. also owes its existence la a great measure to him. This company, by arrangement with the Admiralty, constructed docks large enough to accommodate the biggest naval cruisers. In fact, with the exception of Australia, there are no dry docks throughout the whole of the East that at all approach the Hong- kang decks in eise or Imporisi de.
Mr. Sutherland's services to the locally marked him out for official recognition. Sir Hercules Robinson was Governor of Hongkoax
that time, and pald Mr. Sutherland the com- pliment of making him a member of the Legis- lative Council. He soon became conspicuous for the manner in which be defended the intererfu of the locality. In resisting the first Imperial Millitary Contribution Impesed on the colony be stood almost alone in demonstrating its injustice. Mr. Sutherland felt that if the colony had had any semblance of representative Government the Imperial authorities would not have dared to Imake the levy, and what he did was to constitute himself the exponent of the indignation of the people of Hongkong at the advantage which was being taken of their helplessness. The money was demanded for Imperial and not for local defence, and, in so far as the Crown colonies resant such tax, they unquestionably have right on their side.
