BREATHING MOVEMENTS AS A CURE.

་་

Breathing being such a common, and appar. ently such a normal, process, it seems 'Tange that it should have any share in the production. of disease, and that any one, should advise people how to perform this function properly, yet there is sufficient proof to show that imper fect breathing or lack of knowledge how faily to expand the chest and lungs is a most fruftici source of disease.

The lungs are conical in form, and are inclosed in a beehive-shaped cavily called the chest. At the summit of the chest the langs are inclosed to a long casement (the ribs), which is more or less rigid, while at the base they are free and unrestricted in their movements. R must not be overlooked, however, that the bony wall of the chest is suficiently gilding to adapt itself to almost any size of the lungs, no matter whether large or small. is well shown in the chests of those who, like singers ar gymnasts, expand their lungs by systematic training, or in those whose lungi are augmented by breathing, the attenuated atmosphere of elevated regions. On the other band, disuse of parts of the lungs results in fiat neur of the chest, while disease of thear organs is liable to be followed by a more pronounced Hongkong Observatory, 17th November, 1893. depression and deformity of the chest walls. The rangement of the a-tubes also plays an important part in the production of disease of the lungs. These are divided in such a way si to conduct the air principally downward toward the base of the lungs, and therefore the lower part of the chest is filled first with air, and the upper part last, or not at all, except Ing during a full inspiration. This partial Alfing of the lurgs is niso dae to ar other canse, We possess one-fourth more breathing space in our lungs than actually needed to carry on This facilitates our the processes of life. adaptation to conditions of varied atmospherte pressure, and meets such exigencies as impair- ment of a portion of the lungs, but under ordinary co ditions, near the sea-level, this lavish supply of lung-surface becomes a source of great danger. The least readily : fluted pari of the langs, the aper, has no exercise; and consequently becomes wesker. The savage has a larger lang-surface than civilized man, and is comparatively free from pulmonary affctions but as soon as be is confined to reservat na, his idle lile renders him Hable to this case.

Nolwhibatanding the greater flexibility of the lower part of the lungs it, is a well-kɛown fact that the breathings movements of the civilized female differ markedly from those of the male, She breathes chiefly with the upper, and be with the lower part of the lungs. The former is called the costal, the latter the abdominal type of breathing. By some anhoit·len the prevalence of the cratal type among women was attributed tight lacing, while others gard it as distinctive simply of the female structure. I found, kowever, by obrvation of the respiratory movements of 81 Indian and mixed-breed girls at the Lincoln That seventy-fire showed a decidedly while the six who showed a divergence from the type were either half three-fourth white.

Then the Professer fell to chatting about the in which "square" dances had fallen into decadence, and how, too, the schottische had lost its popularity, The Minust de is Cour w's not much danced he said, except on sp cisl occasions ; but the gauoste which is similar but liveller, had sometimes to be arranged,

"The demand for the pas de quatre, or barn dance, is greatly on the increase," added the professor "but the pas de quatre of the ball room is not to be confounded with the dance associated with the Galey Theatre. The ball zoom pas de quatre has reference to the number of steps; the stage dance of the same name to the number of dancers,”

A young lady, proficient in both dances, oblig. ingly tripped them to demonstrate the difference, Both were charming. The ballroom par de quatre, which is for two persons, and not for a soloist, reminded one somewhat of the schottische step with a waitz movement introduced some where: and the tuge pas de quatre had that peculiar kick which every Londoner now sees the street children illustrating at corners where

Now this soggett the very Interesting faqairy whether civilised woman with the costal tppa of breathing, that is with the apes of her lungs in contant excrcite toas liable to pulmonary disease as civilized man whose lungs are for the most part inactive In their upper portion or imefietly exercised.
