A SURVEY WANTED.
TO TER ZUTTON OF THE "Hongxomo TELEGRAPH," SIR-In your issue of the 14th inat. I notice a paragraph notifying mariners and others of the discovery of a patch of rocks lying midway
between Turnabout and Hallan Island.
It is koowa to many that this patch of rocks
and disturbed water was discovered by Capt F. D. Goddard of the Douglas Co.'s steamer Hailan, who passed over it several times in his frequent voyages down the coast, sounding over it on various occasions, and ultimately reporting it to the authorities in ilongkong and suggesting that the spot should be surveyed. This has now in a measure been done, but why has the
place not been shoroughly surveyed? Why should a well known and frequently used pas

BORNEO NOTES.
(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)
Sandakan, 16th September,
There is nothing startling to report from here, but a note or two will at least serve to remind your readers that Borneo (semains above
water.
Our Race Meeling opens on the 17th inst, and of course, is the topic of the town. A good Eumber of people are said to be coming over from the West Coast for the special purpose of Jalaing la the carnival, as are also one or two from Sarawak; it is even hoped that we may also have one or two visitors from Hongkong.
There has been another flood on the Klos Batangan, by which a deal of damage has been done to at least one tobacco estala. A curious feature in these floods is that their existence does not by any means indicate a local rainfall, for they occasionally occur when rain is really wanted on the plantallons. They are, of course, caused by beavy downpours to the far interior.
It is and unced here that a company bas been formed i London for the purpose of cultivating coffee and sugar on the West Coast, Coffee on the Bute estate will be ready to pick about the first week in October, and Governor Creagh has consented to visit there and will formally pick the first berries. From this time onward li is hopefully anticipated that ➡ the out-forn will steadily and surely lacrensa,
FOILED.
A blazing summer day, and the road to Sandown Park thick with dust.
"Enough to choke a fellow," Brice Summer exclaimed, as his phaeton bowled along the level road leading from Klagston. "But you don't seems to mind it, Ringston ; India has seasoned YOU,
I suppose ju
#Just to," replied the latter, who occupied the weet beside his friend.
"I must have a soda, or something," sald Summers presently, checking his horse oppgitte the little inn on the common. The groom was -down in a moment, and the two friends entered, Two bist Scotch and two sodas.!! "in a minute, sir, replied the host. When they were brought, Captain Ringston took a small bottle from his waistcoat pocket and emptied it into his glass.
I wish you would give up taking that beatly oplam; it will do you a mischief some day," exclaimed Summert.
"Ringston, I'm to an awful hole" Sommers said to kis friend are morning at breakfast la bia "I have White Star entered in the Great Commemoration Stakes, and unless he wing I'm broke. Win It be can, if you'll alde, If you will, I would suggest your running down to Flint's place, and riding the beggar a few timen at exercise.”-
All right, old fellow," replied the Captain "I'll side with pleasure, and as to running down to the stables, I shall rather like it than other wise."
So a fortnight before the great race, on which there was already a good deal of betting, Rings to got out of the train at the little station at Lutrall, and was met by a dogcart, driven by
the trainer in person,
"Horse all right, Flint?" asked the Captain, as they drove through the shady lanes leading to the traialog stables.
"Yes, air; but we have a lot of trouble with him, and it's anxious work coming on the top of all the bad luck-horses going amiss or falllog
lame--that we bare bad. Mr. Summers thinks
there is foul play somewhere; but, if these is, blow me if I can fix it on anyone."
"Well, I've brought a patent lock down with me to put on White Star's box and, as he will be quiet with me. I keep the key, with your permisalon, and feed and water him myself."
"Quite welcome to, Captain. But here we are, and there's my daughter Fan at the gate." beauty of the trainer's daughter. way being golden-haired and blue-eyed, with a rather small but exquisite figure,
Before Ringston had been a week in the house he was in love with ber, and she, in spite of his amall, Irage figure and plain features, rather en- couraged than repelled his advances. The new lock had been fitted to White Star's box; he was stence on friendly terms with bisformer tider, and several times the girl would insist on going in with the Captain, but the latter would never let her approach too near the bosse, for fear of accidents. All went well tili' the night before the grey left to keep his engagement in the Great Commemoration Stakes.
The Captain, thin, fragile-looking man. laughed. “Not it," he answered carelessly. Anyway, the habit's formed, and asli saved my life balere now, why, if it does kill me in the|| long run, we shall only be quite."
The bell for clearing the "course had sung by the time the phaeton horses were taken ont. “Come on," caled Brice Summers, "That gray horse of mine is running in this mace, and he's a perfectly mad brute,"
The first thing the friends saw on anteiing the paddock was the crowd, scattering lo directions, as a splendid grey horse lasked out, || his head between ble fora" legs and his heels high in the air. As they hurtled forward there was a cry of terror. The brate reazed madly, overbalanced himself, and fell backward.
