THE death of Jay Gould, remarks Philadelphia Record, seems to have opened the eyes of the New York tax-gatherers. The Assessment én bls taxable personal estates has been raised from $500,000 to $10,000,000. While Mr. Goold was alive he could “swear off" his taxable estate, after the manner of rich New Yorkers; but necessary past-mortem disclosures of his wealth have made further swearing off impracticable.

Hence we may concludo that, taken right through, the English and American races are approximately. of the same height. SOMETHING ABOUT THE "TETARTOS" CASE.
In view of the fact that the Tafarici case is by no means finished yet, but, must come before the Court again on the question of costs in the anit decided by the Jury on Friday last, it is distinctly unfair that the China Maif and Dally Press should so precipitately rush forward with fierce condemastions of the action taken by the question to be decided now by Chlef Justice Crown authorites. In fact, as the principal Clark's whether there was or was not a reason, able prima facie cause of action, and as these two self-constituted authorities have boldly asserted that there never was any reasonable justification for any such course, the rules as to "contempt of court" would seem to apply forcibly; but la this case neither the owners of the Tetarios nor their counsel, Mr. J. J. Francis, QC, will probably take the treable to file the customary affidavim requesting his lord ship to admonish their simpelig advocates;
on the other hand, the Crown authorities are naturally diffident of exposing themselves to charge of laterfering with the liberty of the press out of spite or petulance at losing a case of such Importance. Thus it happens that the Daily Prose may with impurity call the Government action "exceedingly ir judicious." and the jury's verdict "the only one which could possibly have
