THE steamship voyage from New York to within ten years from now, saya Mr. J. H. Biles, the designer of the Inne us one of the gatest New York. Mr. Blies is one of the greatest English authorities on all questions of narine engineering and naval architecture, and his article in the current number of the North American Review, on the possibilities of speed in transatlantic travel, expresses the deliberate opinions of an expert. His estimated increase of speed, as stated, will be by the substitution of 30-knot for 10-knot ships, and he believes the fncreased speed may be attained by a combine ation of devices. His 30-knot ship would be 1,000 feet long, 100 feet beam, and 30 feet draft. He calculates that a knots per hour can be gained by the use of nickel steel instead of ordinary steel and by the substitution of light bollers of the locomotive type for the marine bollers now employed; that 3 kasts can be gained by the use of oil in place of coal as fool, and that 41 knots additional speed can be made up by im. provements in dimensions, machinery and con- struction. Of course the only question in the construction of a ship of this kind, says the Marine Fournal, is one of cost, and as marins capitalists do not build swift steamships just for the fun of the thing, they are not likely to make the same mistake again that was made with the Great Easters in getting too far ahead of the times, Until the fulness of time anives for retiring the New York and Textonic class of ships from active service, therefore, it is hardly probable that the expense of nickel steel steam ships will be practically considered,
