A carefully-conducted series of house-to-house visits among the morphine divans, amplified by Investigatim into the private consumption of the various other narcotics, such as pills, powders, tabloids, and #qu'd preparations, which de rot figure sa prominently in a mere casual Inquiry because their consumption does not necessitate Boy particular apparatus, such as infections or smoking would reed, and such as the poorer class of corties find it more convenient to Ret at publi: house than to keep for them selves at home--all these matters having been most thoroughly sought out and alted, careful investigation shows that the available evidence is all of the same kind. STEAMERS TO BE BUILT IN ENGLAND.

The Victoris (B.C.) Daily Colonist of July and gives the following particulars regarding the proposed Great Northern Hue of steamers to be run between Puget Sound and Far Eastern parts, under the auspices of Messrs. Samuth Samuels & Co., of Yokohama and London:-

Mr. F. C. Davidge, who has been in St. Paul for the past few weeks making arrangements with President Hi1, of the Great Northern Rail way, for the establishment of new steamship line between the Sound ad Oriental ports, has returned home, having been successful in bis efforts. As Mr. Davidge is Victorian, he has looked after this city's interests, Inasmuch as he will have Victoria one of the principal ports Mr. Davidge of call for the steam hips. says all agreements entered upon so far have been very satisfactory, and the final one, to com plate the negotiations, was signed in the pre- tence of Mr. Samuels, bead of the firm of Samuel, Samuels & ro., who came from London to St. Paul expecially for that purpose. There can, perhaps, be no better idea of the strange- ments given than that which Mr. Davidga ez. pressed in an interview which was granted a Statile Telegraph reporter while In that city on, Tuesday last. It is as follows:-"I have been twice to St. Paul, and, after two months' time, finally succeeded in closing arrangements with Mr. Hill. Our agreement is such that the In- terests of Seatile merchants have also been can- suited, so that they can ship to intermediate points on the tallway at the same rates a we can, as it la the terminal Eastern points that we are Traching far. We will run steamships direct from the Orient to Seattle, with a short stop at Victoria. In Seattle the firm of Samuel, Samuels & Co, will have their coast office, of which F. C. Davidge & Co. will have charge. All outgoing shipments, such as lumber, Gab, etc., will be from this port.

Chinx and Japan, having nine tank stesmers afloat and twenty-one under contract, which will make a fleet representing an favestment of three millions sterling."

Regarding the now steamships, Mr. Davidge says it will probably be next May before they are vesdy for service. Their construction bar noi yet been commenced, but the plans uron which they will be ball will be got out immediately and submitted for inspection to the promoters of the las. The first ship, although it is not known what one she will be, is expected to arrive here from Hongkong via Yokohama some time doring the last of August.

Being lenocent and inexperienced in the ways of the great world, I beartily wished myself back in the calmer waters, close to that far-off shore the sunny Far East, or even in Timbuctoo. Old mariners and weather-beaten vagabonds every class and colour crowded the pavements, with the girls and elderly women they had once left behind bat had now retursed to. And they were, no doubt, very much overcome with emotion and Scotch whisky, for some of them were rolling and shouting one way, others tacking along another, the gentlemen sometimes getting in the centre of the rood to raise their fists and bass room to bestow a black-eye upon some passing acquain tance.
