SURGICAL MARVELS.
Mr. C. C. Lewis held an ingoest at the Liver pool Arms on Monday afternoon on the body of William Ira Raby, of 32, Florence street, The constant aim of surgery is to reduce the Plaistow, captain of the steamship Patthan rate of mortality In cert∙ip dangerous operations, which traded on the Chinese coast, fare Risby, and with this object experiments are going on all the widow, stated that deceased left England the while. These experiments are often co- about ten years ago, and had kept up a corre sinned for a long period of time upon the dead spondence regalary since that time. About a body before being once tried on a living subject, month ago he wrote from San Francisco that be This was the case with a new operation, which was coming home on sick leave. It was intended to take the place of Dr. Webster came and prescribed for him, but the improved Carian operation, be died on Sunday. He had previously told kis wife he believed he had a tumor on the Ever. Dr. Webster deposed that he found the deceased suffering from hemorrhage. He treated alm, but when be called again the man had died. A post-mortem examination showed that there was a large abscess in the cavity of the liver, and this had burst, causing death. The Jury seturned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.
THE COST OF MINING SILVER.
Symphyscotomy consists of splitting the bones of the pelvis. It was tried twice in Philadelphia lace the first operation of the kind in this coun- try, which took place here, and it was not fol. lowed by any disastrous result. In the record of all the cases here and to Europe since this opera tion was introduced the mortality is lower than the Casarian method, and it is hoped it may be perfected so as to dispense with the latter alto- gether.
The protection of the eyes after the per- formance of an operation for cataract is another matter. to which attention has recently been drawn by accidents happening when these organs are la « dellessa condition. For at least two weeks after this operation has been per- formed it is very necessary that the eyes should not be touched. With this object ie, view an oculist has designed a pair of wire shields to be worn like a pair of spectacles and to be kept on day and night until all danger of injury is over. Oculists have recently been trying a new leaved cocs of Java. It is closely related to ampine; with it, it is said, the indectomy can be performed painlessly two minutes after putting three drops in the eye.-New York Tiligram.

A great many partial statements have been minde, says the San Francisco Call, as to the relative cost of producing gold and silver. If that relative cost could be correctly ascertained and made permanent the true ratio between the two metals would thereby be found. Our law presumes that sixteen ounces of silver can be produced at the cost of producinganathetic made from the leaves of the small one ounce of gold. This relation may hold good one year ex period of years, but in ang course of time there will be wide. varistions. It is known that for same years after the discovery of gold in California and Australia the cost of producing gold 'fell below that rasis. In other words, for several years it cost less to produce one ounen of gold than to produce sixteen ounces of silver. From 1849 to 1873 when the allver dollar was dropped from the Alst of American coins, the cost of pro- ducing gold was less than the cost of producing sliver in the legal ratio. Consequently no silver coin of full legal weight was minted. For a long period of years up to the time when the coining of silver dellars was stopped by la their coinage had been stopped by the high price of silver balllon. The relative amount of silver and gold prodoned in the last ten years Indicates that liver is now being produced at less cost, on the 16-10-1 ratio, than gold. But It does not follow that this condition will be permanent. The gold advocates have attempted to show that sliver can be produced at less than Its present gold values than about 60 cents an ounce. These esilmates are based on the output
of some few productive mines, where work is being done favorable conditions. But all silver mines have their periods of non-productiveness. No account is taken in these estimates of the coat of putting the wines in working order. The cost of mining and milling ore, when body of rich material has been located, is the basis of these estimates. Still, it is possible that the que ratio of silver to gold is higher than sixteen to eng. It may be eighteen, or even twenty. The tree ratio must be found by striking an sverage through a long series of years. The silver-producers can afford to take the chances of ratio in the absence of legislation depriving sliver of any of its important functiona
