THE RAISING OF THE "AMIGO"
The roughsketch given below affords some idea of the general plan of operations conducted by the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Company in raising the steamer Ange, sunk in Hongkong harbour by the steamship Bantam on the 19th Jaly. The starboard side of the Amigo wa penetrated pearly abreast of the funnel, and the engine-room was immediately fle-led; then through the tunnel ventilators the water rose and filled the mala hold, gradually sinking the after part of the vessel, which, by the way, was practically emptied of cargo. Thence along the between-deck the water had clear access to the fore-hatch, bat as the steamer was afloat forward when first the stern grounded, no water could get into the fore-hold until there was enough weight astern to bear the vessel down. This we believe misted those on board, who imagined that the fore part of the steamer would remain afloat safely, and sono precautions were taken in the fourteen hours between the collision and

From the latter a few small specks of grayish colour containing metal as does the gold were got in washing. At the present moment there are some forty Chinese on the Sababan, all on gotel and making good profits. A Malay party was being organised in Labadatu to proceed to the place, and a Chinese party have taken with them implements and apparatus to make a dam and work the bottom of the stream.
In conclusion, Mr. Francis apologised for his fusinuation as to his Worship having see the information before hearing the case. His Worship accepted the apology.
Now in view of this exhibition of vile temper, baseless accusations and consequent apolovy, after what kind shall Mr. Jony Joseri Farcis, Q. Cy, be classified, and in what order be set down? As an ordinary Police Court bully, or as a bellicose barrister "whose frothiness of diction alone acts as a buffer often appear to border dangerously on the domains of contempt and the conse- quences that follow such indiscretions. Was it not HORACE who sought to inculcate in the minds and memories of men the value and weightiness of the principle that passions ungoverned govern the man through whose being they sweep? Perhaps Mr. FRANCIS never stops to ponder on such themes as these. And has not a latter-day philosopher laid it down that those who are rude, tyrannical and imperious to their inferfors, are invariably humble. dattering and cringing to their superiors? Again, perhaps Mr. FRANCIS is too practical to heed the sweeping truth contained in the above; anyhow if he kens the precept he sadly fails to practice it. However, we doubt. ✨ HOW TO MANAGE A SHIP IN A

TO THE EDITOR ̈OF THE “Hongkong TelegraĀPR.”. SIR.-Having just returned. from the North, It was only yesterday that I read in your issue of the 26th July the report of Dr. Doberck's « lecture at the Mercantile Marine Association on How to manage a Ship in a Typhoon," and the discussion, which followed. My experience at sex leads me to endorse everything that the President, Captala Tillett, sald, and to entirely dissent from the views expressed by Dr. Doberck, not only on the question of heaving-to o ronging, in which case I should say, especially with a but also as to anchoring for shelter in a typhoon, light steamer, pay out a lot of chain on the weather sacher, and allow short scope on the Ice cable.
It appears that some members of the Associa tion are under the impression that what is known as the "Bokbara typhoon" was not a typhoon at all, but was in fact nothing more than a heavy N.E. gale.
