LONDON, June 17th. The correspondence between the Government of India and the Indian Office has been issued. It opens with a letter to the Indian Conachi ender date of March, 1897, urging the home Government to aid in the settlement of the silver question by an International agreement, falling which, not to def-r determining upon an Indian policy as, if the International agreement should not be obtained, the United States might sud- denly stop the coinage of silver, leaving India anprepared. The other communications discuss the fall in the rupee values and the factuations In the rates of exchanges,
The Council, in a letter written In June, advises If the International monetary conference at Brussels fails and a direct agreement between India and the United States cannot be attained, the mints of India be closed to the free coinags of silver and the gold standard be introduced. In a mizule Barbour, Financial Secretary of India, opposes the stoppage of free coinage anti it becomes evident that the United States will not adopt free coleage, Barbour estimates that the total active circulation in India amounts to 1,150,000,000 rupees, while a much larger pro portion is hoarded. To establish gold currency, with full legal tender currency, composed entirely of gold, it would be necessary to withdraw from circulation 1,150,000,000 rupees, replacing them with £77,000,000 le gold.
He therefore contends that with a gold stan- dard In India a large proportion of the circula- tion must continue in silver, with a silver legal tender to any amount. If both metals be maïs, rained in circulation, gold coinage to the total smount of £15,000,000 would suffice. JI

In a subsequent telegram from the Earl of Kimberley to the Viceroy of India, dated Jane 7th, 1893, the former announces the recom. mendations of the Herschel Commission, as adopted by the tonncil at Simla yesterday. In advising the Indian Government to exchange gold at the rate of 6d to the rupee, the commission ways the object is to guard against the sudden considerable rise in exchange.. Quartermaster James Coster, aged 33 years, who became sick of typhoid fever one day out from San Francisco, died on the night of May sand, just after the steamer left Acapulco south bound, and he was buried at sea the next morn- ing.
Fresident Carles Exeta of Salvador, and ex- President Sscan of Nicaragua, did not arrive on the Acapulco. Sierra, when the steamer left Corinto, was supposed to be at Granada, where a conference between the Government and re- velutionists was held. The revolutionists were in power in San Juan de Sur and the Govern ment at Corinio. The Acapulco was not to stop at San June. In order to prevent any communication with the revolutionists only regularly listed passengers of the Acapulco were allowed to land at Coriato and nobody was allowed to take passage on her, whether native er foreign. Several Americans are said to have arranged to leave the country, but were not allowed to do so.

LONDON, June 18. Gladstone gave further reply in the House of Commons to-day to a question asked yesterday by the Right Hon. George J. Goschen as to the power of the Indian Government to coin rupees as the red arose. Gindalone said that doubt. less the Indian mita would not be restricted to exchanging silver for gold. The act adopted on Monday by the Indian Government repealed certain clauses of the Indian coinage act of 1870, but the power of the Indian Government to purchase liver and coln rupees whenever It thought fit was not affected by the new act.

A Cabinet officer, speaking of the financial ¦situation, sald this morning there was no doubt in his mind that the repeal of the Sherman jaw would bring about much needed relief, whether temporary or permanent time alone could demonstrate. Sill there was no certainty even now that Congress would repeal the Sherman law. The House must be more favorable than it seems to be. He intimated that if the Fre xident were convinced that Congress would immediately repeal the Sherman law that body. might be convened in extra session before September, bat, he concluded, "the leaven is working." According to Treasury advices silver continues to decline, the price in London to-day being 34 pence per oonce, or 739 ceats of our
money.
This makes the silver dollar worth today 11 ballon 57 cents. Sluce the Treasury went out of the market as a purchaser of silver (June 21st) the price has declined from 81.2 10. 73.9 cents per ounce. July 3rd is the time for the next purchases to begin, but It is blated at the Treasury Department that purchases may be delayed until July 5th or 7th.
CITY OF MEXICO, June 28th. The tremendous diep In the price of silver, tringing exchange on New York to 66 per cent, has created much discussion among Mexican bankers. They generally regard the present situation as offering a good opportunity for the United States to force bimetalli ni upon Europe. It is suggested by one that the United States might issue a gold lean of $500,000,000 41 per
cent bonds, which, it is said, would be immedi ately taken op in Europe, where all other Gov. crament securities would Immediately drop with heavily, not being able to compete American, bozda.
Then, according to the theory, gold would flow into the United States, and in a short time bimetallism would have to be adopted by Europe, and the enormous, quxatity of silver held by the American treasury would rise in value, the whole transaction being immensely profitable to the United States. It is said here that if nothing is done to bring about bimetalliam, all the silver-using countries
will begin manufacturing for themselves, and the United States and Europe will lose enor- mously la foreign trade. The United States, It is niged could afford to undertake this gigantic Snancial operation, being able to feed it, and has now a wonderful opportunity to settle the allver question permanently.
