It is difficult to follow the course of the | Hazara rebellion. From late reports it appoira the tribesmen mere goaded to Insurrection by the arbitrary action of the Amir's officials in Hesud, a district which lies in the valley of the Upper Helmad, south of Pamian. The Afghan governor seized the family of a local Haza chief and deported them to Kabul. He was promptly attacked and besleged in his fort, by the local claas. Terms wolo arrived at under which the stege was raised on condition that the captives would be released. The Governor took advant» age of the trace to flee to place of safety, and Afghan troops marched against the HaZAYAS. The latter took up a defensive position on the Helmand, but were surprised at night and de- fented with a loss of 250 killed. The Afghan loss was also heavy. On news of this defeat reaching the tribesmen farther to the south they assembled their forces and succeeded in defeating another column sent to operate in the Debaangi country. Since these two actions the Hazaras have gener- ally been in a state of unrest, and the Awit has
