"BULLY" HAYES, THE PIRATE.
OF THE PACIFIC.
A CHAPTER IN SOUTH SEA HISTORY.
No. 11.
Before detailing my own first experiences of the 18-stone pirate 1 most mention some other ine'dents in his career which will giṛe a fair Ilfustration of the rotoriety he had acquired and of his keen sense of humour. Long before these two gent men (Bolly Hayes and Ben Peese) had commenced to exploit the lice, Gilbert, Kings. mill, Marcħ:11 and Caroline Groups, Bully, then owner of a small, fast-sailing schooner, had made unto himie Í a game-pa tióniaily as a connois, seur ut Island beauty among the Marquenum, Sucicty, Hervey and Pumota Groups, from Nokahiva to Rip-nul (Easter Island), that ethnographical mystery of the Southern Seas, who gratie and mile ble people, 27 years ago, met with an dreadful a late at the murderous band, of the Peruvian slavers.
Sono after the slavers had gone a story was current in Etern Polynesla that Bully had landed, armed beats' crews at Anna, In the Pauca'u Arenipelɔgy, and selted a number of gbls whom he sold to Chillan and Peruvian buyers Bow as a master of fact, Hayes never sold - 'n tive girl, though he was slways willing to la ter for a new chirmer any member of his balem who had called upon ħie fast dinus trates, 'And if the other man in these Rule matters evinced the slightest wan' of trade-reciprocity, be generally regretted, i, for he would lose the Honsehold chat el and get nothing fo her, save, perhaps, a bed pounding and many bumps and excoriations, or, perhaps, a sarcastic note Informa- ing him that the wißer could not afford to waste time bagging over so triflag a matter as the pice of anniive Venus,

On hearing of this farewell textimonial busi. cas, the skipper of Brander's schooner became greatly excited-Hayer, be said, would put his own constraction on my glits. To this, in my youthful innocence, I replied that I didn't care, as it was my business to make a present if I chose; whereupon the skipper, a jolly old sex-dog named Tom English, told me that that was all very well, but that he (English) would be looked upon as an accessory, and Hayes wou'd make him suffer for 1) when they met again.

"Li Hung Chang acts for the Emperor. -He is virtually the Government. You remember that General Grant said of him that be w11, next to Bismarck, the greatest statesman he had met on his trip around the world,
"The Chinese are sometimes slow to set, but once aroused they are the most vindictive people on the face of the earth, I think they would be prepared to act quickly in this matter and what- ever action they take will be lasting."
When asked whether the action of the Geary law had already worked any injury to American interests in China, Dr. Condit stated that he could only reply to that in so far as the question related to missionary work there.
