The Whampoa is a steel steam vessel of 1,734 tons, gross registered tonnage, official number 86,981, hullt af Glasgow in 1897, and of the port of London.
It appears from the evidence given before the Court that she sailed from Shanghai on May 6th 1893, bound for Newchwang, with a cargo of general merchandise and a crew of 36 hands, all told, The Whampoa left Shanghal on the 6th May 1893 and passed Shawelshan light, bearing S.E, one mile, at 9 a.m. on the same day, when the course was shaped N.E. (magnetic). Atro.go .m. having run 17 miles, the course was altered to N. 9 E. (magnetic); the weather was cloudy and no observations could be taken throughout the voyage. Atrop.m. the engines were eased to half-speed, and the steam whistle kept going until 3.25 am on 7th May, when the fog lifting, she again went ahead "full-speed, after which the speed of the engines was regulated from time to time, according to the density of the fog. At 6.53 the ship was stopped and a sounding taken p.m. In 16 fathoms, mud, when the assumed position of the ship was Lat. 36.°40' N., Long. 122°42' E, with S.E. Promontory light house bearing 26 miles N. 15 W. (magnetic), and the ship proceeded at half-speed until 7.26 p.m. when the weather becoming clearer, she went fuil "peed ahead again About 7.40 p.m. the Captain, who was looking out forward at the de, sighted the Plansde rock, which he mistook for a junk, and erdered the officer of the watch (Mr. Nicholson, mate) to port the helm. He then went on the bridge to have another look at the supposed Junk, and was in the set of stopping the engines to take another sounding, when the ship took the ground at 7 45 p.m., and engines were stopped.
