GREENLAW'S AGREEMENT.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, TUESDAY, MAY 30, 1893.

Viceroy has therefore memorialised the Throne asking for rewards to be given to the most energetic and deserving of the officers.

P

A jank laden with sait fish bound on a voyage from Ningpo to Foschow, whlis yet within sight of the Chinhal forts and inside Flagstaff Island, was attackel on the 6th instant by a piratejunk, and although the crew, in bo s that some war junk or gual sat in Chinbal harbour might come to the rescue, made a des rate resistance, they were at last over-powered, losing two men shot dead and five badly wornd.1 with sword cats. None of the cargo was touche? but the pirates took away over $3‹ › in allver and all the clothes of the passengers and crew, valued at another In last night's issue we gave some particulars $392 No one came to the aid of the snfor- of the deings in the North of a man named tomate junk's crew although one steam gunboat Greenlaw; his chartering house-boat, and the and two sea-going war jonks were snugly lying sequel of sbat Il-fated enterprise, capped by the Inside Chiobal barbear not the shots firedbe mysterious disappearance of the German sailor, tween the conflicting janks could exally babeard Glendwinkel. In referring to these occurrences by the people on shore. the N. C. Daily News of the 26th inst, anys:- We refrained from saying anything more about the Greenlaw matter yesterday, as we had some reason to believe that the police had it in hand to telegraph to Hongkong to arrest Devere allas Greenlaw and Alexander there, but it is reported that the British and German Consulates and the police are taking no steps at all. it has been stated that no charge has been brought against Greenlaw. in the British Court, hut this is explained by the fact that when M. Gaillard went there on Monday he found that being Whit Monday it was a holiday at the Court, but he distinctly states that the Consol, Mr. G. Jamieson, and the Captain Superintendent of Palice. Capt. McEven, pro- mired him that the two men should not be allowed to get away and they got away the same night. It is difficult to reprobate sul ciently such inxity as this, which practically amounts to a denial of justice.

Our readers will no doubt be interested in seeing a copy of the contract that was made between M. Gaillant and Mr. De Vere and his friends for the hire of the former's boat. Mr. De Vere endorsed the contract for himself and friends under wet another altas, that of "J. Valentine and Co.".

"Articles of agreement entered into this 16th day of May, 1893, Between Gaillard Jeane of the first part and Harry de Vere, 'Captain Howard, J. Chandler of the second part:-

"Whereas the party of the first part cupplies one house boat with all necessary gear, eating utensils, stove, salle, anchor and chalo and one Chinamen (sic), who shall be responsible In every respect for damage or breakages. And the party of the first part agrees to rent the raid boat for

a term not less than two montba': and nét to exceed four months; at the rate of eighty dollarn fifty cents per month: Meney payable in Mexican dollars the 25th day of each month.

"And that the parties of the second part have all right and power to sail said boat over any river or stream within 150 miles of Shanghal, or where they may see fit. And we promise to abide by the advice of the Chinaman in charge in relative to the weather and sea, and shall in no wise endanger the boat by so doing, If we do, we are responsible for all damage."

It will be seen that no authority was given to take the boat to sea, and that the Chinese foda was to be consulted as to where the boat could safely go while one of the first acts of Green- law or De Vere was to put all the China men ashore. We may mention that in a letter written by Greenlaw to M. Gaillard after the former's return to Shanghat he mentions that no cartridges had been used, whereas a number of cartridges were missing, and both barrels of the gan had been discharged. How, in the face of this, of the condition of the boat when it was brought back, and of the known charecter of Greenlaw, the German Conani- General could profess himself satlafied with Greenlaw's access of the disappearance of the German sailor whom he took on the boat, we cannot understand.

NOTES FROM CHINESE PAPERS.

This is said to be an account of lying in the river are detained on heavy demurrage the difficulty of obtaining cargo rapidly enough or in sufficient quantities.

We understand that a most dastardly crime was committed in Bangkok on Sunday evenlag, the victim being Khoon Apal Bhlalt, a minor judge of the International Couil or Sim Tang Pratet. The unfortunate man was sitting quietly in his house about 8 p.m.. when he was shot through the heart by a concealed assassin, who fired through a crevice in the wooden wall of the house. No reason can be assigned for this co tell at large, la admony of the murderer,

An amusing case was heard before Mr. French at the Brilib Consulate on Saturday, A Siamone girl who had "very imprudently married a taller, having fed from berlawidl wedded busband immediately after the nuptials, and taken up her abode with another Lothario, the outraged husband, accompanied by eleven brother taller, west to the house and created as uproar. The "ledy of the house," whose mission it was to bring the twelve tailors to justice, produced a couple of witnesses to prove that they had so made a disturbance. Mr. French very discreetly dismitted the charge,

In the event of necessity arising, it is under stood that H.B.M. gunboat Swift will afford protection to German as well as British residents here, as the German Government do not consider the occasion so serious as to warrant the despatch of a vessel to Bangkok.
