#EAST LYNNE" AT THE CITY HALL.
- The London Lyric Company appeared at the City Hall last night in their own special adapta tton of Mrs. Henry Word's novel "East Lynne," and played to a crowded and somewhat tolsterous bouse. It would be out of the question, without seeming to be cruel, to legitimately criticise last night's performance but a failure it was and a dismal one at that. The result only goes to prove that too sudden transition from farcical comedy to bysterical trash of the "East Lynne" type is more than even such a clever combination as the London Lyric Company can attempt with impunity We regret to have to say this especially as it is, the Erst time that fillure could be fairly written after any of their numerous productions while In Hongkong. But that it was the powerful acting of Miss Ethel Arden that prevented the "show" from being a very second-class burles- que upon the original rubbish is the hate truth gently told. She was fally supported by Mr. Graham Stewart who, of course, appeared as Captain Levitòs and by Mrs. J. F. Brian who worked hard to make the most of the testy but still kind hearted Cornella. The balance of the cast may be allowed to draw lots for posi- one ranging from bad to worse. barring the Bullock of Mr. Kitts, who tickled the "Jack" immensely.

My passage down had been a smart and smooth passage of eighteen hours pleasant enough, but soon found that the worst part of it had already to be encountered in going ashore from the steamer.
The anchor had no sooner touched the bottem than about fifty large flat-bottomed sailing sam as if intending to crush their bows in against the pans dashed alongside. They came sailing up hip's iron plates and thus test the stability of the hard seasoned wood with which they are bulit, But such was by no means their inten- tion, for when within a few feel of the steamer they suddenly shifted the tiller hard over and turned round, as if (on a pivot, within their own length. I soon found that the secret of this lay In the strong wooden centreboards they so much depend upon on these occasions and when sailing on a wind. According to the silver men England has never before been in such an alarming slate of general poverty. According to the reporters Buckingham Palace never before has seen such an exhibition of wildly lavish extravagance in female dress and finery. One may guess how the evangelists of the coming social revolution enforced their arguments by this curious contrast. Great hosts of Englishmen are feeling very poor, no doubt, and the volume of business bere has greatly shrunk in the past two years. Despite this the fact remains, as Gladstone in bis phenomenally comprehensive and brillant Impromptu speech pointed out, that England is anet creditor of the world at large to the tune of some ten billions of gold dollars, which she has hot the slightest intention of having repaid in silver dollars.
