The Netherole Hospital is now in course of erection, and will probably be finished by the ed of June, when as soon as possible the proposed alterations in the Alice. The Treasurer's Balance Sheet shows a very serious excess of expenditure over income during the past year. The extension of the year to thirteen months, in order that for convenience the collecting of subscriptions from the Chinese the financial year may in future end on 31st January, accounts for $500 odd and loss on remittances to London for medical and surgical stores through the low value of the dollar, and the increasing expenses of an increasing work chiefly account for the remainder; but, while there is no immediate cause for anxiety on this score, it is peculiarly unfortunate that in the year new Hoppital preceding the opening of a

Chinese village fetes are of two kinds, the one general and the other domestic. The former are held annually, blennially, or even once in five, ten or twenty years as the case may be. Domestic fêtes of happy character are always accompanied with theatrical shows, displays of relies, curios, and paintings, embroideries and needlework, with tableaux, lanterns and illu minations. Temporary structures, such as pavillons, mat-skoda and platforms are always erected.
In some cases there edifices are permanent in character and become pubila or semi-public buildings after the festivities are past. Some. times towers ranging from 100 to 300 feet are put up. They are made of bamboo filled with mats and painted in the most brilliant colors.

In every town are at least two or three temples, of which esch is dedicated to any number of ancient warriors, philosophers, saints, hernes and philanthropists. They ate memorial galleries rather than pantheons.
Thus for example if Washington, Lincoln and Grant of the United States, Wallington, Disraeli and Tennyson of England, bad lived in Chion, they would be canonized and reverenced to-day, the Lame as are Quang-Tal, Confucius, Mencius sud Lao-Tszce. It is not a ellgious cult or worship, as too often so. called by careless writers and thinkers. It is a system of customary reverence and thanks- giving.
